Big, big room -- which 10-20k speakers?
Audiooracle, I agree that a lot of the speakers won’t be able to fill a large room, but I don’t think the Salks are in that category. At the 2010 RMAF the Salks were in the Iris ballroom. Steve Stone of TAS said they were the best sound of the sho...
Big, big room -- which 10-20k speakers?
I suggest the Salk SoundScape 12s. They are incredible with vinyl. You are not likely to find them used, but since they are internet only, the price is much less than a bricks and mortar place would have them. They sound very natural and have so b...
Top monitors 3K - 6K range
Salk HT1's. They are a little large, but they can look pretty sexy on Sound Anchor stands with an exotic veneer.Bob
best tubes for Aesthetix Calypso
I tried Telefunken smooth plates and 60's Mullards and like the stock Sovteks the most in the 12AX7 spot. I thought they were the clearest and cleanest without being analytical. The Mullards were too romantic without no bass and treble. The Telefu...
Speakers to consider around 5k used?
I recommend the Philharmonic 3 speaker. Dennis Murphy builds them in the DC area. They are only $3500 new but they sound like a $20k speaker. For your budget, you could have them build a beautiful piano finish cabinet to your specifications. If th...
Advice on stand mount speakers
I would suggest a small tower speaker. No reason the space taken up by the stands couldn't be used to increase base response. It wouldn't take up any more floor space. Bob
RMAF 2012 Postmortem
Dpe,A buzz in the 10-12 kHz region from a ribbon tweeter should show up in a frequency response curve. On my RAAL ribbon tweeter the response curve is as flat as a pancake. A lot of dome tweeters start to roll off above 10 kHz and I think that is ...
Review: Salk Sound SoundScape 8 Speaker
Strange that you did no pasting. Your resume must have been in your cut and paste buffer. Somehow the paste function must have been triggered anyway.Bob
Review: Salk Sound SoundScape 8 Speaker
Interesting resume Paul! You can also add that you have experience in cutting and pasting from word processors! LOLBob

Mitch, I see that you have a vinyl system. If you do get the SS8’s then please post comments on how your vinyl sounds with your new speakers. I was surprised at how different my vinyl sounded when I got my SS’s. Even after 2 years I am still excit...

ARC Ref150 or Aesthetix Atlas with Vandersteen 5A
I heard the ARC's and the Aesthetix equipment with the Vandersteen 7s at the last RMAF. I thought the ARC's were much better. I haven't heard the carbons, but if they sound anything like the 7's then that would be my only choice.Bob
How to get the impact of a live concert?
I went to a guy’s house to listen to his speakers a couple of months ago. He had some old Jensen pro speakers. When we played my Salk demo disk the first half of the songs sounded a lot like a live concert. There was little image, boomy bass and a...
The best speaker you ever heard?
The best speaker, which I have heard at $50k or above, is the Vandersteen 7. The midrange was the best I have heard from a cone speaker. The runner up is the MBL 101e speaker. The tone was less transparent, but a pair has the best image and air.Th...
Devore Nines and Daedalus Athena comparison?
I heard the Daedalus Athena in the First Sound room at the 2011 RMAF and thought they were in one of the better sounding systems at the show. They were not in the running for my best of show vote but they were excellent. I am not even into high ef...
