If you were a tube preamplifier manufacturer
Mr S- Actually, the cost of their ECC88 exceeds that of the pre-68, NOS Siemens CCa by 25 to 50 dollars(right now, for a very close triode balance, high transconductance reading CCa). I still prefer the CCa, as I feel it has a more accurate render...
If you were a tube preamplifier manufacturer
I would have to choose one of these, as they are the only current production, small signal tubes that come close to the performance of the cream of the NOS crop: (http://www.euroaudioteam.com/ecc803s.php) (http://www.euroaudioteam.com/ecc88.php)
Newbie Troubleshooting Question
You can upgrade to CREE Silicon Carbide Schottky Diodes(better than HexFREDs) yourself, and install the previously suggested capacitor kit off eBay for about $70.00 total(plus your labor). If you can replace a resistor(like you said before), you c...
Advice on stacking equipment
Besides the mentioned issues: Your equipment(digital OR analog) is emitting interference that will be absorbed by other gear(especially if stacked), and will affect your music signal. Digital circuits are really good at generating interference, as...
Newbie Troubleshooting Question
If you enjoy the DH-101: Find a DH-110 on eBay. It was more transparent than the 101, and(being somewhat newer) you'll have some time before the caps start to show their age. Here's one with Hafler's MC phono head-amp built in already too: (http:/...
COnverting Audio Equipment Voltage From 110 to 220
Best bet would be to contact the manufacturers/service centers of the respective equipment, and see if OEM replacement transformers are available for 220V service. Then again- You might see about a large step-down transformer to take with you.
Newbie Troubleshooting Question
The capacitors in the unit are past the 20 year old mark by a very comfortable margin(going on 30). No doubt- Ripe for replacement. I'd start with the power supply caps. Were you provided with a manual when you bought the unit? If not- Buy one on ...
Which tweak for new amp: PC or footers?
Hi-Fi Tuning fuses or a better PC(PC first). The Vibrapods will help, but won't provide nearly as much improvement(unless you've REALLY got some resonance issues) as power supply upgrades. Try to find a good used 10ga PC for max-benes.
What voltage can damage audio equipment?
You're talking about a less than 5% fluctuation in voltage. Nothing at all to be concerned with!
Break In Your Speakers...... What CD and how long?
The out-of-phase/in mono/facing each other/closely situated trick works very well. Be certain the system is set to mono(or use track 6 of the following CD), or you're cancelling a smaller percentage of the sound. The Ayre CD, 'Irrational, But Effi...
The Room, not us, determines our speaker choices
There's no denying that room acoustics are of primary importance when setting up either a recording studio, live music venue or a listening room. I'd generally rather have so-so equipment in an excellent room, than excellent equipment in a so-so r...
Power supply upgrades
Enjoy your music!!
Power supply upgrades
Sns- I agree completely with Al about not replacing caps with anything of a lower voltage rating. Your RS804 can be replaced with an IXYS FBE 22-06N1. The Phono One seems to have a spacious chassis. I would think you'd be able to accomodate four I...
Power supply upgrades
If he could find some Black Gates to directly replace the caps he has, there would definitely be an improvement with regards to dynamics. Some of their old suppliers still have the smaller values in stock, although at a premium. Upgrading to Black...
Power supply upgrades
Increase your filter capacitance, and replace your rectifiers with FREDs. I've done the former in the past(in tube amps) with excellent results. That's one of the first things most tube amp modders address, as it will improve the amp's bottom end ...
