Are film capacitors directional?
They are not polarized(as electrolytics are), but- YES; there is a preferred direction, with regards to orientation. Some helpful insights: (http://jimmyauw.com/2010/04/24/observing-inner-and-outer-foil-of-some-popular-capacitors/) (http://www.aud...
Why do NOS Tubes sound better than new tubes?
Don't write EVERYONE that manufactures tubes off, just yet! These guys are making some VERY nice tubes currently: (http://www.euroaudioteam.com/en/products-000002.html) Much can be done with excellence(even these days), IF you take pride in your c...
SDS speed control
Have you changed, or applied talc to your belt & lubed the motor lately? Cleaned the circumference of the platter and pulley, with alcohol? If your belt is slipping significantly; no amount of correction from the SDS will help.
the meaning of the word "better"
Of course, "better" is subjective, and(by definition), "different." To me; If it(whatever has been changed) sounds more like what I hear, listening to live music; it's, "better!"
An affordable step up from AR SP14 is?
I owned one for a number of years, and was quite happy with it. Find a NOS, pre-mid 60's Siemens CCa(no internal date code/grey plate under getter support), or(at least) an E188CC. It's very easy to install an IEC socket in the SP14 chassis, which...
Conrad Johnson PV11 Noise Issues
Yes- retube! Be certain that whatever tubes you buy are certified/graded as, "preamp/phono/low noise", "gold" or "Platinum" by a reputable and knowledgeable dealer. ie: (http://www.upscaleaudio.com/pages/Testing-Small-Signal-Tubes.html)
digital vs vinyl thoughts
How can anyone expect to resolve this issue, given the plethora of variables involved? ie: vinyls obtained at garage sales vs "audiophile" quality pressings, MM vs MC vs MI vs strain gauge cartridges, the quality or lack thereof of cabling/systems...
Psvane Teflon capacitors real or fakes?
re: Copper oxidation- Gold is the only metal foil that will not oxidize*. Any capacitor, that is designed for use in your electronic gear, will be sealed(generally hermetically), of necessity. *Nor will platinum or palladium, at room temps.
Some tables have soul and some not
YES- The post-nazis have closed the thread about, 'Post Protocol.' So much for our First Amendment rights to Freedom of Speech. Given how badly this site now $UCKS, with it's, "new improvements", perhaps it will become, 'AudioGONE' before long!
What is the crossover point ?
By dividing one into the other(Net Worth/Money Spent); you will, sometimes, find ones Love-for-Music quotient. More often; others Love-for-Equipment, or I-Have-it/You Don't constants must be factored in. There are too many variables(diverse degree...
Shielding components from EMI/RFI... Help please
Check page 14 of this catalog: (http://percyaudio.com/Catalog.pdf) I, personally, use the TI Shield(between all my components), but- the Stillpoints stuff sounds interesting too. The last page of the catalog has some new products from Bybee, for t...
Triangle Cellius SE Modifications?
I'll be here! Happy listening.
Triangle Cellius SE Modifications?
Based on the fact that you added a supertweeter, I feel it's safe to assume that you aren't into the, "warm" or "laid-back" sound that some embrace. I can thus recommend either V-cap Teflon/tin or copper foil caps, which are both very liquid and r...
Triangle Cellius SE Modifications?
Hello Brad- re: My other thread- Thanks for your confidence. Not having ever had my hands, or ears, on a pair of your speakers; I can't make any specific recommendations. Have you taken a look inside the cabinet and determined of what quality the ...
"Violinists blast holes in violin experiment"
I particularly liked the title of the article, 'They Blinded Me With Science'(very profound, but- could have been, "Deafened Me"). The bottom line though: As long as YOU are satisfied with the staus quo(your system, listening abilities or whatever...
