Help with buzz / hum that's making me insane r
Fold the excess speaker cable concertina style (like an accordian) back and forth like a sine wave instead of round and round. Coiled wire behaves like an antenna or motor or something. Best of luck finding the sibilance.
Are Dust Covers a MUST
Yeah Dan but it was a toss up between that and the Cone of Silence in the chief of Control's office from Get Smart.
Are Dust Covers a MUST
A cover can block vibration because it acts like a fence (think Faraday cage but for airborne radiation instead of electromagnetic) between the excitement in the surrounding air and the tonearm. Consider, can the neighbors hear your rig better wit...

The hiss with your ear next to the dome tweeters means they are working. Agree with Herman it's not a malfunction. Advise you not increase the volume above normal listening levels to listen only to the hiss. You can lift ground by adding a two pron...

I'm in the blocks airborne vibrations camp. Maybe it all depends where you keep the table in relation to that crep you're playing too loud, haha.
mono versus stereo ampflication
If I had monoblocks I'd put each near its speaker thus reducing the need for exotic speaker cabling. Even if you still thought that necessary the cable runs would be as cheap as possible. On the downside in such a scenario I'd want the monoblocks ...
Advice on Shure cartridge, please
Shure may still have a searchable FAQ that addresses these kind of questions. When I queried it about the longevity of a M91ED it said no worries. However if memory serves, the replacement stylus for the type III was no longer available. If it's n...
Ever discover cheapo speakers actually sound...
Good gear overcomes poor speakers due to the gear's musicality. If your gear sounds transparent, natural, liquid or airy any speakers can latch onto it. When the electronics lack these qualities speakers have no means to produce them. I'm not sayi...
Ever discover cheapo speakers actually sound...
This thread reminds me of the ones asking what's that weird sound my speakers are making where the answer is the speakers can't make sounds by themselves. The puppet and master relationship between speakers and upstream gear dictates that good gea...
Pin declaration of balanced input / output XLR
Sounds like the inverting button does the trick for you. Flipping 2 and 3 at one end of the XLR ought to accomplish the same thing.
postal Money order and fraud?
If the crook was using a fake ID you're probably sunk. But definitely ask the PO, they're sure to have a procedure. Best of luck.
recommend excellent cassette for playback only?
When my Nak CR3A needed repair I was also fed a large rebuild quote. When I made it more clear I wanted it in working condition it cost one third as much.
Threshold - S/300 Was there a Series 1 & Series 2
I think the Series II says so on the front badge. The early S/300's, both Series I and II, say "overall feedback free" on the front. These have light grey tops and rear aprons. The later models S/300 say "optical bias" on the front, say class A/AB...
2-way speaker with best bass
Certainly Brobdingnag has the best bass. Lilliput may offer some astute, refined, defined and well behaved speakers but the greatest among them can ne'er be more than a magnified miniature.
In wall stereo speaker recommendations?
I recently installed four very nicely made Radio Shack ones in an Airstream trailer; Radio Shack Model 40-4099; $30 each. They've got web-available-only ones for $130 with the same look. The in-store 40-4099's are a steal.
