Biasing a valve amp
...production! New tubes labeled "Tungsol", " Genelex", "Golden Lion" ... are NOT the same as the originals! Shortcuts have been taken to produce cheap tubes (cathode materials and coatings, less hours spent on vacuum pumping). The old saying "you...
Biasing a valve amp
Grid voltage for KT88/6550 is typically -55 volts. Less than this plate current can increase and exceed a safe level! I also recommend checking the screen and plate voltages. Current production tubes may not be able to handle high screen and plate...
BEST FEMALE VOCAL EVER
What, no Kate Bush fans here? Great British singer with a nice series of recordings over the past 40 years! Start with "The Kick Inside" (1978) and on from there!
Problem related to Push-Pull or EL34?
Tube amps with output impedances greater than 1 ohm will not have a flat response into a speaker's varying impedance. They will act as tone controls! So, choose your tube amp/speakers with this consideration in mind!

Find a competent technician nearby that can examine your amps and compare them to an original schematic (to see if any mods have been done). EL34's will put out a bit more power than 6L6's (35 watts/pair - 25 watts/pair). They also take a higher b...
Amps that bring liveliness to low efficiency speakers?
Perreaux 2150B. 200wpc/8ohms, 400wpc/4ohms. Clipping at 300+ and 500+ watts respectively! Three now for sale on EBAY - $600, $800 and $1290. I bought one to use with my restored DQ-10's - a speaker that really benefits from a powerful amp!
Stereo EQ in the hifi world ...?
A multi-band equalizer from SAE will give you a lot of flexibility for tailoring your sound! I collect and use vintage SAE gear.
Speakers for a very large room?
Check out the larger Ohm Walsh speakers. They work well in large spaces! Call John Strohbeen at Ohm Acoustics in Brooklyn, NY. I use a pair of the Sound Cylinders - remarkable 3-D imaging and performers right in the room!
Vintage Luxman SS integrateds? Please educate me
I had a Duo Beta Luxman integrated that I bought at GoodWill for $25! Big and heavy! On the way home I accidentally dropped it! Plugged in, it went into protection mode. I regret leaving it behind when I moved. It was probably repairable! Looked a...
Big vintage amps worth paying for and keeping for a long time
Sorry, 200 watts/8ohms! And a LOT more at clipping!
Big vintage amps worth paying for and keeping for a long time
@tubegroover : my mistake! I have the 2150B. Big and heavy! 200 watts/ohms, 400/4ohms. Clipping at 300+ and 500+ watts respectively! Sound quality as good as Levinson or any of today's expensive amps! List price $1500 in 1983. I bought it to use w...
5AR4 RECTIFIER TUBE NOS MIL. PHILIPS MISLABELED 5V4GA
All three rectifiers (5Y3, 5V4, 5AR4) will drop the B+ voltage by different amounts. They also have different maximum current ratings - the 5AR4/GZ34 being the highest. Because of this (and scarcity) real vintage 5AR4's are rather expensive. The R...
Had anybody tried this
FES - Flat Earth Science. As effective as painting your room's walls a different color!
EQ for hifi stereo
Buy a vintage SAE multi-band equalizer! Excellent gear - I own a nice collection of SAE!
