Great Cartridge for Graham Phantom
I am running my Phantom on an SME 20/2 and using an old Audioquest AQ7000nsx that was upgraded to a Fe5 when the original nsx cantiliver broke. I haven't felt the need to try something else because the sonics of this Scan-Tech built cartridge are ...
300b vs. NOS mullard el34- both amps in push pull
Some of your answer will depend on your speaker load and your room. If you could answer that, along with how loud you listen and musical choices, we could make a more informed recommendation.
Mixing amps pre amps?
As Dcstep says above, you should be able to mix brands of amps and preamps. The only time it could be a problem is if the preamp has a high output impedance and/or the power amp has a low input impedance. For practical purposes, the ratio of amp i...
Who is your favorite blues guitarist
Yep, I agree with Xiekitchen. Anyone who thinks Hendrix, Clapton, Page, Beck, or others were original acts should listen to Albert Collins' early recordings.
Listening for tube degradation
It always seems that I find tube failure being preceded by increased noise, such as when a tube in my phono stage started kicking off big thumps through my speakers and subwoofer. It is often difficult to hear when tubes have aged because they slo...
What is the best place to buy tubes?
I have bought tubes from Kevin at Upscale Audio, Andy at Vintage Tube Services, Ken at Advantage Tube Services, and Brendan at Tube World with good results. Tube World is one of the higher-priced places, but he has an unmatched inventory, not to m...
High vs. Low Efficiency Speakers
Duke above did a great job of explaining the factors of a speaker of lower effiency vs. one with a higher one. One other factor to consider is the nature of the load, i.e. the impedance vs. frequency curve. If you have a relatively high voltage se...
A Bass Question
Even though the full 20 Hz wave will not be found in your room, you will get an air pressure wave at 20 Hz.
What's your favorite remake of a song
How about Paul Young's remake of Hall & Oates' Every Time You Go Away?
A Bass Question
Actually, MarkPhD is correct, except that in air, the speed of sound equals the wavelength times frequency. Also, even though your room will not support even one full 20 Hz wavelength, this is not the only factor in bass. Ever hear a boombox in a ...
Top Speakers for Nearfield Listening in Small Room
I am about 5 feet from each speaker and the speakers are about 6.5 feet apart measured from the insides of the speakers. I still get a full soundstage with no dropouts in the center of the soundstage. Again, thanks for the replies.
For those who buy new releases on vinyl
The Elusive Disc is also a good source for new vinyl, especially reissues.
Impressed with Tubes
My take on tube equipment is to use it where it makes sense, since tubes won't work well in every application. Certainly, the best use for tubes is in voltage amplification applications such as in preamps, input and driver stages of power amps, ph...
Top Speakers for Nearfield Listening in Small Room
Thanks for the responses so far. There are more options than I originally envisioned. There is nothing inherently wrong with my current WP7 setup. Great bass, dynamics, soundstaging, detail. Don't get me wrong, I would certainly consider monitors ...
needle problem
I am not sure from your description if either the front or back has dropped down, or whether both have, but another cause could be that the VTA (vertical tracking angle) has shifted. It could be that the VTA adjustment, if there is one, could have...
