Most hyped turntable, tonearm, and cartridge?
Back in the '70's when a lot of this started, we had a lot of different TTs in my shop.  Garrard was a joke back then--plastic and sold for about $40.00, I think.  Thorns' tables were hard to get for a while.  I think they were a couple hundred bu...
Whats your favourite track to play to the non hi-fi visitor?
GREAT SELECTIONS!  Wow...Steely Dan, totally wonderful.  Also, James Taylor...knew him from CH in the '60's.Try Maria Muldaur, Midnight at the Oasis and Joan Baez, Diamonds and Rust as well.Ronstadt is also a great choice, as is the white UB-40 al...
Speaker Positioning
Well, yes and no.  Some here say it is not possible, but set up 50+ pair of Magneplaners in every possible customer room you can think of and you learn a few things. With Maggies, placement is EVERYTHING!  So, you learn by trial and error and exper...
Upgrades that met/exceeded your expectations and those that felt short
My recently-acquired SP-6B is wonderful.  It replaced a Lux CL-32 that was long in service--40+ years. As usual, Audio Research stuff is wonderful on Maggies.Looking for a xover (EC-3) and big Audio Research amp (old one that is all tube, not a hyb...
Seriously? Why Buy ARC Ref 6SE? seems Benchmark LA4 is a better choice.
Funny, I thought money was only in issue when two items performed identically in YOUR ROOM.I would say this is a non-discussion.  Take both home, listen, and buy the one that sounds the best IN YOUR ROOM and that you can afford.End of discussion.
More power for moderate listening levels?
"You can never have too much power"--probably attributed to Bob Carver, inventor of the Phase Linear 500 and 700.  Sure, they blew-up a lot, but when they worked, they were shrill and loud.Bi-amp with an external x-over or get two identical amps t...
Your favorite 'concept' album
Gotta go with Sgt. Pepper and Pet Sounds.Geniuses at work!Cheers!
What's the best and/or favorite piece of equipment you've owned? And do you still own it?
Original Audio Research D-150.Wish I still had it!Cheers!
Budget Tube Preamp ($2000)
I picked up an Audio Research SP-6B for about 1100 and it is a wonderful pre-amp.Cheers!
High end stereo preamps? Worth it?
YES.  When I first plugged in the Audio Research SP-3 pre-amp in 1974, in my shop, I had a true revelation in how systems can sound.Obviously, in the many years since then pre-amps have evolved and even improved somewhat.  I suggest you work with ...
1st Album you Ever Owned?
Can't really remember--so long ago--but it was probably Duane Eddy, Especially for You, 1959.Loved the sweater he was wearing as well as the Gretsch, which I owned one just like it that I bought for $200 in 1968 and sold for $200 in 1971.  Today, ...
Amp repair cost — is this right?
I recently went thorough this repair business myself, so a word from experience.I took several pieces to a local shop, STEREO FIXERS, who basically took a lot of money from me and did nothing.  In desperation, I then sent my Luxman pre-amp to the ...
Have speakers really improved within the last 20 years??
Well, let's see.  Many manufacturers have copied Magnepan and now make speakers that are very tall.  I guess that would change the metrics you derive from measuring them. Also, I would assume Mr. Winey's son is working to continually improve the Ma...
Do you use a Subwoofer when listening to stereo?
No, but I would not be adverse to trying one.  I have a very inexpensive one on my TV surround sound system and it seems to be OK.Cheers!
I'm never going to hear a megaspeaker in a good room am I?
If you wish to hear super-expensive speakers in "the right room," which I assume means set-up properly for demo, it will not be at a hotel room show, as you discovered.Call the manufacturer, ask them which of their dealers has the best showroom se...
