Please Help Solid State Amps ?
One sentence should cover it - Bryston 4B-ST which can be purchased used for about $1500 and with it comes the best warranty (transferable) in the biz...
Upgrading to Tube; Amp or Preamp
sorry - brainfart - meant to say better combo in a tube pre/ss amp than ss pre/tube amp. You could find a used Rogue for between $700-$900 or spring more money for the 99. If Rogue is really a serious choice you could buy as used 66 and have it up...
Upgrading to Tube; Amp or Preamp
I presently have a Rogue 66 (not magnum version) mated with a Bryston 4B-ST and I am very happy. I think getting a tube preamp (Rogue is my "bias") is the way to go - keep the SS power of the Adcom but "warm" it up nicely with a tube preamp. While...
Power Cord Advice
I'm with Sean on this one. Had some success using lower priced pcs on my previous cdp -Arcam 8SE and on my preamp's power supply. But never realized any differences on my Bryston 4B-ST amp. A local dealer advised that of all the amps he carries th...
I normally don't ask for help, but.....
If all Audiogon members who read this post were to take 10 minutes (or more) away from the computer and prayed for this family I sincerely believe that we would as a group accomplish more good than we cumulatively do for each other as "audiofools"...
Which ic between amp and preamp?
www.homegrownaudio.com & www.coincidentspeaker.com. My system is Sony SCD-333ES sacd - Maple Audio Works Natural ic - Rogue 66 - Coincident CST ic - Bryston 4B-ST - AP Oval 12 bi-wires - Maggie 1.5's. Tubes presently in use are GE and I have a...
Which ic between amp and preamp?
I have had great results using Coincident ics between my Rogue 66 and my Bryston 4B-ST. They are not too common here being sold in used condition but do audition them if you can. I could also make a recommendation to audition the Homegrown Silver ...
Best tube pre under 1500?
While I have never heard the 99 I do really like my 66 in my system (unit not yet been upgraded...) - As for backing out of the 66 for a 99 its your call. If the 66 is a used unit from someone here then maybe the ethical thing to do is purchase it...
Last horrah before baby comes?
Buy your "little blessing to be" a savings bond with the $200 so he/she can get themself a little bedroom system in about 16 years and maybe they'll stay away from Dad's gear...
balanced are they worth it?
It has been my experience that when dealing with long lengths (say 3m or more) that balanced is the way to go. If we are talking about a 1m or 1.5m length then you will probably not "hear" any difference between the xlr or rca versions unless your...
PreAmp for Bryston 3BST/Mirage OM6 combo
In the past I had a .5b mated with an older 3B (pre ST) and then I moved up to a BP-25/4B-ST combo. Still found it dry but extremely accurate. Went to a Rogue 66 tube preamp and was much happier. Gave up a little of the detail for a warmer sound -...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
Doc - the copper used is supplied with some type of coating on it and is single stranded solid core. From this point the cable is "braided", "twisted", whatever one would call it using materials in between each strand. This process is proprietary ...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
Steve - maybe my explanation was not specific - there are 2 cables per side in a NON-biwire version. One for the positive speaker/amp terminal and another separate cable for the negative speaker/amp terminal. Totally separating the cables negates ...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
Here's my 2 cents worth...First off let me say that I am a believer in that cables do make a difference (not always for the good) and that bi-wiring also makes a difference (also not always to the plus side of things). This past weekend I spent som...
Amplification for Maggie MG 1.6Qr s
I own a pair of 1.5's and can highly recommend a Bryston 4B-ST which carries the best warranty (transferable) in the biz and can be found here priced anywhere from $1300 - $1600. There are many other good choices - Classe (as noted above), McCorma...
