Polk SDA SRS 2.3 Speakers: Any thoughts on them?
I never liked the Polk SDA speakers on the numerous occasions when I heard them at a local dealer, they were always "dark", muddy sounding and too thick in the bass. I know some members here have gotten them to sing (you might check the best speak...
Can you warm up your tube amp ...
I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure Philojet and Jfrech are right. Last night one of my speaker wires was disconnected from my Jadis amp (cleaning woman) and the amp started buzzing loudly--fortunately caught it right away to avoid any damage. You'...
What's a good step-up transformer?
The best one I have had is the one built into my Lamm LP2, which gives me 57db of dead-quiet gain and is sufficient to handle a Koetsu Rosewood Platinum Signature, which is pretty low output. In the past I've had both a Koetsu, which is well-regar...
Where does that hiss on the master come from?
Are you talking about analog tape hiss? Common from the early days of stereo (listen to any Mercury Living Presence record or CD and you'll hear it), and an "evil" of analog tape vs. digital tape (one of the aspects of digital recording that many ...

Opinions on Meitner MTR-101 Amps???
I just got an e-mail from John Wright. He has a new website, www.museatex.com, where you can get in touch with him regarding Meitner/Museatex repairs, upgrades, etc. He is the person who has been handling repairs and upgrades the past 10 years, an...
Any hi-end Aussie speakers or electronics?
Don't let the "old design" label fool you, Duntech is a fine speaker company and worth checking out. Plinius is from NZ, I believe (close by), Halcro is definitely from Australia.
What's under YOUR turntable?
Plato--you're 50?? Gawd, we're getting old!
What's up with the analog "echo" phenomenon?
In addition to Jvogt's explanation, even with a record it may not be the vinyl's fault, as sometimes the old analog tape has print-through on it, which you'll hear even if the vinyl is cut well enough to minimize pre-echo. For example, the Classic...
What's under YOUR turntable?
The top shelf of a Merrill Stable Table (the original), filled with a couple of hundred pounds of lead shot and sand, in a separate room supported by a lolly column. TT is a Basis Ovation, with Debut platter, bearing and vacuum upgrades.
Sony SACD Owners: Anyone Use a DAC for Redbook?
Ken: Check the AA Hi-Rez forums. The modifiers I know of are Stan Warren, Richard Kern, Dan Wright and Allen (?) Wright (one of the Wrights is a tube mod), and I'm sure there are others. There are various levels of mods and improvements from each ...
Sony SACD Owners: Anyone Use a DAC for Redbook?
While adding a very good DAC is a common practice, I tend to agree with Sean, as long as you're willing to forego the Sony warranty. As Aaronm points out, the Sony's analog stage is OK but not as good as the better DACs out there, and that's where...
Rock Lyrics - Best Reference to Other Rock Group
How about Creek Alley by the Mamas and the Papas, going way back for you 60's rockers, with references to the Byrds ( Jim-now Roger-McGuinn), Barry Maguire, the Lovin' Spoonful (John Sebastian), the Beach Boys (Good Vibrations) and I'm sure others...
Gear in
I'm no expert, but my Sonogy amps have a standby setting where the input stage is powered continuously but the output stage is not. It therefor takes about 30 minutes for them to sound their best as well, as the output stage still has to warm up. ...
60 dB phono, 19 dB preamp, Enough gain?
My Jadis JP80MC had those specs for phono, and I think 20db gain in the line stage, and had no problems with a cartridge with a lower (.3mV) output than yours. Should be fine based on those numbers.
