sacd, vinyl, and rebook.... I'm going to stay out of this for the most part (I've made my feelings known on other threads like this) except to correct a misstatement by Loon above which I think is misleading. The Stereophile article pointed out that the Norah Jones SACD was ...
Dunlavy SC-V and Accuphase I would imagine it depends on the music you listen to and the volume levels. I haven't heard it on Dunlavys, but I've heard that amp at my dealer's driving the Dynaudio Temptations with ease. You may not get the last decibels on orchestral climaxe...
Krell KSA 50 vs. todays ss amps? I traded in my KSA 50 for an 80; the 80 indeed did have more power, was more refined (once it warmed up) though not quite as sweet in the highs, had better bass quality and control, and generally was a better amp. Big problem with the KSA 50 was t...
Kimber vs Transparent Since you can try them both out, that will make your decision a lot easier. While I like the Kimber cables quite a bit, I do note that most of my friends with Levinson equipment use Transparent cabling.
Krell KSA 50 vs. todays ss amps? Not sure if you're talking about the original KSA50 (and 50Mk II, which I owned for a while) or the 50S, which Dave sent the links about. I must say the old KSA 50 was a very nice amp, quite sweet sounding for a solid state design, with far more p...
Preamp with near-reference quality built in phono? Rushton's suggestions are good ones. I would add the Jadis JP80MC and JP200MC (which you can get used for about $10K) to the list, their phono stages are top-notch, although with 2 and 4 chasis you might have space concerns. Superbly musical piece...
What is the best phono preamp you have heard? Lamm LP2 and Aesthetix, and the phono stage of my Jadis JP200. The Lamm phono/Jadis line combination is very synergistic. I would also imagine that a currently updated Vendetta would be among the best units around, if it exists.
Mercury Living Presence SACD's El, you're mixing up RCA and Mercury! Your point is well-taken, though. The Mercs, for example, all have the prevalent tape hiss, though I find it easy to listen through that. As for that low frequency rumble on the Chopin, it's not limited to old...
ARC sp10 joy and concern... From what you describe, I'd say Swampwalker is right. Very difficult to get rid of transformer buzzing--you can try what he suggests but nothing is a sure cure for it. You might ask Leonard at ARC if he has any suggestions. Too bad you probably ca...
Mercury Living Presence SACD's Listened to the Respighi and Suppe discs last night. They are better than the CD versions from before, which themselves were among the best CDs I've heard, in terms of capturing the ambience of the hall and the decay of the instruments. Very open ...
Best of Hearing Aids for deaf Audiophiles? Huh??? All kidding aside, I too am interested in the answer to the question about hearing aids, as I've lost a bit of hearing in one ear due to an infection in there a number of years back. One of my former partners got a special hearing aid for his ear ...
E.A.T. KT88's ??? Many KT-88 tubes are designed like the original MO Valves--the original Chinese Gold Dragon KT-88s were supposedly exact replicas. Haven't heard anything yet that sounds as good as the real thing or is as durable, though, even though the new tubes...
Mercury Living Presence SACD's Elusive Disc is selling the first 5 titles (6 discs) as a package for $100 (all right, $99.99), that's the only price I checked out.
Big Stupid Warm Speakers I saw Duntech Princesses mentioned above--actually, they're pretty neutral, having owned a pair for 11 years, though they are lacking in transparency. However, the one in the Duntech line that might fill your bill is the Black Knight, with bigger ...
Mercury Living Presence SACD's Mine are on order, will come shortly (I pre-ordered the first five almost a year ago, apparently they're waiting for the Respighi to come in before they ship). It will be interesting to compare the Stravinsky to the Classic vinyl reissue, which ha... |
