Music Server vs. PC vs. Transport vs. ?
want a nice interface, use your iphone or ipod touch and get an itunes interface to control your music remotely. Sonos is a nice setup if you don't want to get your hands a little dirty in building a more complete setup. i use airport express unit...
Totem model 1 signature or Dynaudio 52
it all depends on the size of your room. if you have a 13 x 13 x 8 ft room, a pair of mani's would generate enough bass. if you are talkng about a 13 x 24ft room, then you will need a sub. there is plenty of bass but the room will dictate how it w...
Dummy Guide on What's Needed to hook up Mini Mac
IMO, don't use a laptop for a music server. imac's are great (i got my wife a new 24" imac, very fast) but i think a little mac mini (a g4, g5, or an intel based) would work better. most servers (music,file/print/etc..) are dedicated machines. if ...
How many hours weekly do you listen to your system
around 60 or more. i work out of my home and have the music on all day. after work, i go to my dedicated audio room for another 10+ hours a week of dedicated listening.
Stereophile Article - Holt telling it like it is.
maybe now they will do blind testing. i really hate it when somebody says that this is the best something that they have ever heard. this is so bogus. they need to hear the gear they are auditioning in the same room using the same other gear or it...
Mac Laptop & Sound Cards
Ckorody - i have approx 1500 cd's, 20 sacd's, and hundreds of albums. i use the mini for my browsing the net, for work, and it is also used as a music and file server for the other macs in the house. all the macs backup there disks to the multiple...
Totem model 1 signature or Dynaudio 52
i listened to the dynaudio's before and i prefer the model 1's. i also prefer the model 1's to the dynaudio special 25's and the totems are less than 1/2 the price. if you need more bass, get a little rel sub to compliment the model 1's. thats wha...
Music Server vs. PC vs. Transport vs. ?
it is easy to hook up a toslink cable from a mac or an airport express device to an external dac. it is also very easy to build a whole house distributed music system or a dedicated audio setup using a mac computer. you first have to determine wha...
Totem Mani-2 and Counterpoint SA-5000 Pre
i use a classe 200 watt amp with my mani's. sounds very nice. 200 watts are the minimum watts i would use with the mani's. i have also hooked the mani's up to 1000 watt monoblocks and they sounded fantastic. they filled a larger room with ease. my...
Music Server vs. PC vs. Transport vs. ?
i read the reviews in TAS on music servers and the $6k and $12k music servers reviewed don't offer any more than my mac setup (except the touch screen), and my mac setup does much more and it is thousands cheaper. IMO, i haven't heard a music serv...
External hard drive for expanding iTunes library?
speed can be an issue. if your music server is also a repository for your other computers in the house and you have multiple streaming going on, i think it could make a difference. the disk is the slowest part of the system (if you are directly co...
External hard drive for expanding iTunes library?
for music servers, i would recommend a raid 5 setup because it is faster reading the disk. you do pay a penalty on writes, but so what if the ripping of a cd takes another few seconds or minutes. when the music is played back, i want the fast access.
Mac Laptop & Sound Cards
Dbphd, in my dedicated audio room, i use all Classe gear with totem mani 2 speakers. i have my den setup using totem speakers, dk design amp, sony dvp9000es cd/sacd player, and the airport express hooked up thru my wireless network. a mac mini is ...
Mac Laptop & Sound Cards
another option is to go from your mac using the toslink output to an external dac. for my whole house audio (except for my dedicated audio room), i use a mac front end and airport express wireless units that use the toslink out to front end gear. ...
Mac-Mini to Home Stereo Sounds Harsh
it has to be your rotel unit or the cable. hook your cd player up to the pre using the toslink cable you used for the mac and see if you have the same problem. i have both a mac mini and a macbook and have not had these issues. the cable you have ...
