Speakers are the first piece of the puzzle
The crucial concept here is that of the room & speakers.  They will always have the greatest distortion, the largest deviations from a flat frequency response.

Restatement of a post above:It all depends on the recording and mastering done by the sound engineers.  Sometimes vinyl's preferable despite the snap, crackle & pop because the compression effs up the CD so much.Sometimes the CD, SACD or HiRes...

if it is 15 or 20 years old, you may have electrolytic caps that are going bad----> serious business as they could blow your speakers AND the rest of the amp

not clear what the OP means here - if the AC cable to the PS, then Noif the DC cable from PS to the unit (e.g. a DAC) then making a star-quad type cable might be useful; IIRC they can also be bought for a small price
