Why so expensive??
Mrtennis, I suspect you are right, there are other factors in some our purchases beyond the search for better or sound or best sound, I sometimes seek equipment because I'm interested in seeing how single-ended tubes sound, or an EL84 amp sounds e...
Why so expensive??
Greenelec, that may be true, but there is still great sounding equipment that does not cost a fortune, hand-made stuff, and then there is other stuff that costs 3x-10x and no better, or sometimes marginally better sounding. Both fellas (I assume t...
Why so expensive??
The next time you think of buying the $15,000 amp, do a blind listening with a $2,000-$3,000 of similar topology and power (Class A, Tube, Triode, SS) and if you can consistently tell which is which, and consistently prefer the $15,000 amp, buy it...
300B or 845?
Spencer, if you chime in, I'd like to know what you think of the SET performance versus your Atmaspheres.
300B or 845?
Do any of you think that a 15-20 watt SET would be able to drive a pair of Merlin VSMs (89db and very smooth 8 ohm load)adequately in a 13x18 room? I would like to try SET, I have a SETransistor - Pass XA30.5 - and would like to try a tube SE, but...
Your Favorate JBL's from the 70's
My system is undoubtedly "better" than way back then, but I got just as much, more?, pleasure with my humble system back then. I have not thought about JBL in a long time, but when I got my first pair I thought I had it made. I reget not keeping t...
ASL Explorer 805 DE/JM Lab Alto Utopia combo????
I'm not sure your problem would be strictly power, but that impedance dip is likely to diminish the bass performance of the SET. That speaker would seem to need SS or a powerful tube amp with current. Nothing wrong with the amp, just not an ideal ...
Anyone else heard the Quicksilver Triode Amps?
Aronsss, I assume you mean the 6C33Cs work great with the Merlins, you are no commenting the KT88s - is that right. I'm suprised that Mike took the 6C33Cs off the market so fast and cam out with the KT88s - I see the price is also about $2000 less...
Your Favorate JBL's from the 70's
Funny, I'm not sure I have enjoyed anymore than tose early years with my L19s and my NAD.
Anyone else heard the Quicksilver Triode Amps?
I take it that the current QS Triode with KT88 is a completely different amp on the triode amp discussed here has been discontinued.
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions
I agree, the focus needs to be on the speaker. Then get enough watts to drive that speaker - you don't necessarily need a lot of watts, depends on the speaker.
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions
It seems the question is better asked as S"peakers for Rock", because any amp can rock if it is mated to the right speaker. I imagine that some Klipsch speakers will rock with almost any amp, even your Stingray. I think that all that rock bass ene...
Build location for tube integrateds
David, I agree with you. What I meant to suggest is that while their may be a consistent sonic siganture in an amp that is more or less revealed with most speakers, it is critical that the amp/speaker match well to allow that amp to sound its best...
Tube amp for rock? Newb Questions
The Stingray/Dali combination sound like a very poor one and I suspect both pieces are quite good when matched with appropriate equipment. Atmasphere's explanation states the problem clearly. Tube amps need different types of speakers than SS to w...
Build location for tube integrateds
The amplifier/speaker matchup is so important, that I find it almost impossible to evaluate, or make claims about the sound of either component (any amp or speaker) indepently of that system context - one can come to assess either an amp or a spea...
