whats a more detailed preamp
Any of the CAT SL1, even more "neutral" with Ultimate series.
2-3K, Integrated or Seperates
I think 3K integrated should always be better than 3K separates, and probably are. That is, at the same price points the integrated should have better parts with lower chassis costs, and cabling costs compared with similarly priced separates, espe...
Harshness in tweeters: the price of transparency?
As I was reading Tvad's response before getting to the end, I was thinking Pass XA-30.5; I think his reasoning with regards to the amp/speaker matchup makes a lot of sense regarding the pushed quality of the higher frequencies, a loss of balance c...
What's most important synergy wise???
Saki70, totally agree with your "synergy" hierarchy. I think the source>pre is not much of a synergy; only if your using low-gain cartridges is it much of an issue. I would choose the pre without too much ragard to the digital source in this ca...
Preamp Synergy for GamuT amp
For starter cables, I would look at the SignalCable Analog 2 Balanced -- $59 with neutrik connectors.
Balanced preamps with Atma-sphere MA-2's
Thanks for your feedback. I bought a $70 balanced IC from Signal Cable.
Resitor Passive
I used the PiaB with the RM10 as well and it worked very, very well, but I didn't have the K&K at the time. You should call Roger to hear his side of the attenuator versus TVC approach, the fella at Goldpoint said pretty much the same thing an...
Goldpoint Passive Preamps
These assessments must be incredibly system dependent. I had a TVC w/S&B 102 and a Pot-in-a-Box by Music Reference and in auditions, everyone consistently preferred the resitor-based attenuator. I think that my amps and very low capacitance Ca...
Resitor Passive
I went back and forth with the resistor-based PiaB and the TVC with SB102s and for my ears, in my system I preferred the resistor based volume control - which I was not expecting since the consensus seems to be with the TVCs. While the consensus i...
VANDERSTEEN 3 A SPEAKERS
I wouldn't doubt Richard's advice regarding his speakers.
What's most important synergy wise???
I agree about the weakest link argument, but I don't think that in this case, the source to pre link is going to be a weak one whichever approach is taken - I don't think there will be a "synergy" issue; but one pre may be sound better to the list...
an amp without "electronic" sound
I've owned the CAT JL2 for a few years, and now own the Music Reference RM9 Special Edition (Modjeski)and these are among the finest amps I have heard, but for speed, detail and transparency and presence (the others are obviously no slouches in th...
What's most important synergy wise???
I think you should get the preamp you like best and not worry so much with the front-end compatability. The preamp affects the overall sound more on its own terms than the synergy question you raise IMHO. The synergy that is really critical is amp...
What is the 'Chales Shaw' of loudspeakers?
I agree with Cleaneduphippy, the price/performance ratio you are looking for does not exist. That being said, and not what you were asking, the Vandersteen 2s at $2,200 are a lot of bang for the buck whether you think that is cheap or not - it is ...
an amp without "electronic" sound
While I prefer tubes, I would say the Pass XA.5 series (Class A, little NFB)have a lot of the what I enjoy about tubes. I regret having sold it (XA30.5). I think you will find much of the same qualities in the Ayre gear as well.
