Looking for a good balanced preamp: Atma MP-3?
You are going to love the Atmas with your Merlins - my favourite combination after trying many, many pre/amp combos with the Merlins - thought the CAT JL2 was excellent, thought considerablly more expensive.
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones
Well, I'm going to get the Acme and compare them with my Isocleans. At $12 bucks a pop, with silver, sand-filled ceramic, and cryogenically treated they seem like a real "bargain".

Mission, I think the upgrade path is prefereable to having three models to choose from and having to sell my unit to move up the line. It seems more cost effective to be able to buy what you can afford today, and move up the chain as money allows....

The Acme site suggests that one must be sure that their equipment must be compatible with ceramic fuses; why would a ceramic fuse not be compatible if it the right speed, size, and amp value?

Undertow, thanks for the link, at that price it is worth trying a whole bunch and it seems to have all the "bells and whistles" of the higher priced fuses.

Is there a great $10 fuse?

Duke's speculation makes perfect sense as a possible explanation. I use M-60 MKIIIs with my Merlins that have very flat impedance with no frequency anomalies that I can detect. Now, I have heard that V-Caps do take a while to break in, but I'm not...
Most transparent amp you've heard?
In my opinion, the tubes amps on your list that have the best chance of handling the load of your speakers are the CATs (I owned them) - they can drive most anything (the Atma-spheres might work,I own them, but less than ideal IMHO), but you will ...

I don't know much about MBL, but it is obviosuly good gear based on my hearing them at shows. It is interesting to me that when speaking to the folks who make this stuff (I spoke to three who make highly regarded amps)they don't buy the tweeked fu...

Sean, based on those specs, I think that JA is right and tubes amps are not the way to go. As transparent as the Atma-spheres are, they seem like less than an ideal match, even though some may chime in that you can make it work with a speltz trans...

Sean, do you need more than 6-12 watts for those speakers? Do you know what the impedance is like across the spectrum?

When Ken Stevens of CAT was asked by a resistor manufacturer what kind of flavor he wanted, his answer was that he wanted them to have the flavor of water. I think he meant that the sound of a piece of equipment should be like a chameleon so that ...

Well, I don't know about absolutes or anything, but one aspect of a transparent amp, or system, is that the soundscape changes signficantly from recording to recording - that is the system tends not to be homegenized in sound signature, but let's ...

Tvad, I would still say Atma-sphere with the audiophile dictionary" definition. I can also see how in a sense Joule can be considered transparent, yet I would not say it is uncolored. I would also agree that the Pass XA.5 gear is very transparent ...

Drubin makes a good point. What I meant was low noise, speed, space between instruments, and a sense of immediacy.
