Good tube integrated for Merlin speakers? I did forget to mention that the Ars Sonum does actually have a tube preamp linestage, not a passive. Another integrated worth trying are any interation of the VACs.
How's the First Watt F3 Any impressions since the last post?
What amp should be used with merlin vsm's? There is a 2002 designed in the early 80s by Richard Brown; in fact, one is up for sale now, apparently rebuilt in 2005 after UPS totalled it in transit.
What amp should be used with merlin vsm's? I don't know if it is the case with all speakers, but to my ears, the Merlins clearly and consistently show the superiority of tubes, no matter how good the SS. That being said I can live with the Pass gear. But at the end of the day, they're stil...
Good tube integrated for Merlin speakers? What I discovered over time, though Bobby told me from day one, the BAM sounds best when there is a tube preamp buffering the output to the amp. While I believe in passive for many setups, I think Merlin users are best served with a quality tube p...
What amp should be used with merlin vsm's? Any Merlin SS amps users out there? What are your experiences? While I use two tube amps with the Merlins, I find the Pass/First Watt Aleph J works very well indeed, though frankly the Atma-sphere OTLs are at the top of my list after having tried ...
An Audiophile's journey I must say that after trying many amps of various types over the past 25 years or so, none can do (or not do) what a great OTL can do. They are not cheap, they run warm, and they do need more tubes than usual for a given power rating - but once yo...
recommend full featured preamps? Roger Modgeski of Music Reference/RAM Labs is working on a tube preamp in the $1,000 range that uses tone controls. He was looking to design controls that overcame the problems of tone controls and the sonic damage they do. I think they may actual...
First Watt Amps Any one heard the F5 and compared it with the J?
First Watt F4 Any impressions of the F5 yet?
Advice requested on speakers If you are just going by local availability, then you should definitely audition with your ears and take what we have to say with a grain of salt -- listen to what your ears tell you, we all hear differently, and have personal ideas of what kind o...
Anyone permanently convert from tubes to SS? I think SS will almost always work better with B&W, even high powered tubes, tubes need speakers with flat impedances, the higher the better, otherwise SS will handle the speakers better. I do find that no matter how hard I try to want use SS,...
Advice requested on speakers Blow aways the Vandies? I don't think so. I've heard the Montanas, and they are fine speakers, but for soundstaging the 1st Order Xover and phase aligned drivers of the Vandersteen create an extraordinairy deep and wide soundstage with good locali...
fuses - the $39 ones or the 85 cent ones Thank you.
Advice requested on speakers For timbral accuracy and sound staging I would suggest you audition Merlin VSM-MXe, they are simply more timbrally accurate and resolving than Vandersteen IMHO. They are however, not as full range as either Vandersteen as they are essentially flat... |
