Passive preamp vs. powered Tony, I think you and I have gone through a similar path and respeonded to passives in the same way. Ultimately a very good tubed preamp just gives me the kind of sound I prefer. I was going back and forth with the Bent Tap-X Autoformer and decide...
upgrade advice I think you have made an excellent choice for your upgrade.
Passive preamp vs. powered This is typical of the passive vs. active discussions you will find. A real mix of experiences and preferences. One thing I will say, is that every passive I tried offered alot of bang for the buck, they are very good in many ways and hard to beat...
Passive preamp vs. powered The clarity of passives is very impressive at first, it sounds so different than actives in that regards that it is very alluring. But after several tries, I ultimately decided that active stages provided a better listening experience for me. I do...
Speakers to Match to CAT pre amp and CAT mono bloc Just about any speaker you like. The electronics are not limiting your choices. Based on your musical taste, I would seriously consider the Merlin VSM-MXe. I think Ken likes Merlin, Avalon, and Wilson. Ken has Merlins at the factory and has been a...
Passive preamp vs. powered If you are happy with the sound, that is all that is important. The one thing I have noticed, is that many, if not all folks that have tried the passive route (I have used Placette, K&K SB102, Bent Tap)seem to go back to actives, especially to...
ATC vs Merlin I heard ATCs many years ago, so I can't compare, I will say the Merlin speakers (I own VSM-MXEs) are the best two-way speakers I have ever heard. I suspect that but for the lowest bass, their monitors are likely to be in the top rank as well. I'm ...
Zu or Harbeth I think this a really hard recommendation to make beucase they sound so completely different that it should be easy for you to detemrine which approach you like. The differences are not hair splitting, and it really is a personal preference. I wou...
pass labs xa30.5 vs aleph 3 As soon as someone has heard the J2, let us know you impressions. Sound intriguing, but it is only 25 watts, proabably 90db or higher sensitivity.
Anybody heard the Verity Rienzi? In a room that size I don't think you could use them rear-firing (without room treatment to control the bass).
Anybody heard the Verity Rienzi? Verity are fantastic speakers, I would also look into Merlin TSM (for a room that size), though the VSMs might also work well in that space and produce more bass. I would be careful getting a speaker with too much bass for a room that size, unless...
Atma-Sphere MP-1 and MP-3 comparison Is use Cardas GR with the preamp and VH Audio with the M60s..
Pleasantly Surprised I don't know what "very expensive" means. But the NOS Siemens EL34s sold by RAM Labs are superb at $140 a pair. For less money, the current production Winged "C" EL34s are very good, mayb $50/pair.
Atma-Sphere MP-1 and MP-3 comparison Grateful, no doubt you are getting the best bang for the buck, and I do think those upgrades are well worth it. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I enjoy mine. A little tube rolling with the 6sn7s is well worth it I think. Either the Sylvania chrome...
Atma-Sphere MP-1 and MP-3 comparison I'm not sure anything but a side comparison with your ears is going serve you well if you need to decide between the two. The MP3 is superb, and if you were able to stop thinking about the MP1 you "should" be happy for a long time, it is perfectly... |
