Help me start off right in the reel to reel realm
Teac X1000R or X2000R w/DBX noise reduction. Auto reverse, and much more. These are great decks.
Next upgrade?
I have a Mint LP and it is a great tool. I also have a Dynavector 10/5. Be very careful with these! They bend very (too) easily. This is the 2nd one I have carefully mounted and even though they sound good, to me they are a piece of junk, since I ...
Are tone controls worth a second look ?
Unless you want to speaker roll, tone controls are good if they are a good component. I have a DBX 14/10 EQ, Cary tube amp and pre, with Linn sources. It is mostly used for attenuation rather than boost. I hear nothing that degrades the signal, ho...
Vinyl "bleed through"- need set-up advice
Have the cart. re-checked or use a mint lp protractor. I used one on my Linn Sondek 12 Dynavector 10/5 and Ain't that just like a woman off Johnny Winter's Winter of 88 album stopped echoing. I thought it was done like that in the studio, but I wa...
Speakers that like corners
Klipsch Quartets, Forte, Chorus are all designed for corners.
Polk SDA Speaker info needed...
Carver C-9 sonic hologram generator will do the same thing if you can't find the cable. It cancells interaural crosstalk. Try to get the cables. BTW speaker placement is very important. It's not for everyone, but I was addicted to it for years. Go...
So many preamps, so little time
Cary SLP98P or (L). Balanced won't matter. I hooked up my bal. Cary CAD120S XLR's on amp to RCA's on preamp and it made no difference. The preamp has a main vol. control and a left and right vol. or bal. controls. BTW the amp and preamp are a matc...
Speakers for Rock Music
Klipsch Quartets. Hersey's on steroids.
Dynavector 10X5 versus Sumiko Evo III
The Sumiko is not as bright as the Dynavector. I have the 10x5 but beware they are extremely delicate. They sound pretty good on a Linn Sondek 12 w an Ittock II arm, but you can easily ruin one trying to mount it. I am very careful and used a mint...
Cary 120s
Had the Rocket 88 and V12R they both kick ass and the 120S kicks both of their asses IMO. At least when hooked up to the SLP05 or the SLP98P. You should be very happy with a 120S at a good price, unless there is something wrong with the unit.
Tone controls? Sorry about the heresy.
McJntosh preamps w/ 5 band eq's are nice because each one is a dedicated amp.
Speaker advise for a new Tube Amp.
Get a pair of Klipsch Quartets. Don't put them in the corners, put them on a dresser so the tweeters are about at ear level. I keep a pair on my dresser and they sounded great with tube equipment. I no longer use them, but maybe I'll get a receive...
How often do you get a chance to see live music
That's why stereo's shouldn't sound like live you are there. That's what the studio is for. Hardly any bands sound like they are in the studio when they play live. It's great when they do but it doesn't happen very often.
SS Amp Recommendations?
Money an issue in this hobby? Good luck for 500.00 Try Carver
What Speakers
I've heard a single 275 hooked up to Wilson Sophia II's and it sounded very nice at a dealer in Tampa. The 275 runs very cool also.
