Lowest I need to spend on a DAC to beat a RP6 ?
One trick with DACs is to use clean power feeding them. If you have clean power going in, a relatively inexpensive (but good) basic DAC can sound quite a bit better than it would if it were just plugged into the wall. I have two systems and a good...
Amp buzz in speakers
Don't change the outlet. Flip the interconnects to the amp around the opposite way and see if the hum lessens.
Should you tune room to headphones
Also, in my large room 14'x30' with high cathedral ceiling (the small room I mentioned above is 11' x 14'), I have the large VMPS RM40 ribbon hybrid monitors powered by a Rogue Audio Medusa amp. In that room I have a single room-tune in the right ...
Should you tune room to headphones
I have HiFiMAN HE-400 headphones and their EF-5 tube headphone amp and also the KingSound H3 Electrostatic headphones and their M20 OTL tube headphone amp. Both of these setups give great headphone sound. That said, the headphones. do not compare t...
Hum problem - help
Hum is sometimes difficult to track down. I had a hum problem in my right channel just recently and the only thing that made it go away was using a 2-prong cheater plug to plug in my DAC. And the results were the same using 3 different DACs so it ...
Speakers for SET 8 Watt 300B system?
I'm having very good luck driving the 94db/watt Wavetouch Grand Teton speakers with a pair of 8-watt 300B amps. In fact, in my 14' x 11' room, the results are nothing short of amazing. Good luck in your search.
Equalizers-Using to compensate for hearing loss
Broadstone, I think it could work and I have found that some of the dbx model EQ's sound very respectable in a high-end system. My backup for my expensive Lyngdorf preamp/equalizer is a dbx 1231 stereo 31 band graphic EQ with variable gain. I like...
Proofreader wanted
Here's an actual reply I received right here on Audiogon when I asked a seller to pack a heavy amp with thick heavy foam (not packing peanuts) all around the amplifier:"Hire those guys pack and ship I can ship this I will trow it in outher box off...
Class D and Power Cables
Absolutely, they all sound different... some are brighter, some are darker, some have more bass and/or a better midrange. So the "perfect cord" for one system/amplifier might not be a good match for another. That's what makes it tricky. If you like...
tube buffers
Or you could just buy a power amp like the Rogue Audio Medusa that couples a high-quality tube input stage to a Hypex output stage and get great smooth musical sound with low noise and high power while not having another box and more cables to dea...
CD copies
Try it and see. If you use a media player like the free J. River Jukebox 14 it will tell you the sampling rate of each track it plays and will play hi-res formats. For example 24-bit 96kHz = 4608 bps.
Is a high priced Line Conditioner needed
The bottom line is that your dedicated lines do NOTHING to remove or address spikes, surges, power sags, EFI and RMI riding in from outside your home (although they do reduce interhome interference). In other words, yes, you do NEED additional fil...
nos tube suggestions for manley chinook
I happen to think the stock Russian tubes sound VERY good in the Chinook. But if I was going to play around with it I'd try either the Simens E88CC gold-pin tubes or the Amperex gold-pin 7308's if you can get them.
Why is there little interest in RTS couplers?
It's probably because us'll don't believe that RTS is the best way to go. Sometimes systems sound worse instead of better if components are tightly clamped. Plus it's ugly and could potentially mar a component's finish. In my personal experience I'...
Speakers with their own amps
I believe most of the ones that are available use solid-state plate amps. I'm not saying this can't work well, but if you wanted to use a nice sounding tube amp you'd be out of luck. That said, depending on the particular speakers, you might be abl...
