What sounds best integrated or separates?
I'm sure there are some excellent sounding integrated amps out there & the one excellent solid state integrated that comes to mind is the Portal Panache. But for me I feel they restrict the persons ability to experiment with different preamps....
Solid state amp ultimate stop...
I don't know what my ultimate amp is since I have have not heard it yet. Very good answers above, I think most audiophiles could build an excellent system around any of the above mentioned amps. For many its the hunt not the kill (stopping means y...
Preamp with lots of outputs?
My vote is for every negative person to leave this thread, go home & sleep on it. That is my input to the question of outputs.
More power or better quality power?
Bob_reynolds, in my opinion, a quality watt represents power that contains a highly desirable audio signal & is pleasing to the ear as opposed to mediocre sound.
More power or better quality power?
All things being equal, a simple circuit will most always produce a better sound at low levels and if you don't need the additional power, thats where you need to be. More power does involve more circuitry which can adversly effect low level detai...
Break in period
Sunnyboy1956, I can understand your impatience for break-in but just enjoy the journey and the music. Many manufacturers are strongly against leaving tube gear on 24/7 as it will lead to premature tube failure (quality tubes are not cheap) which i...
Preamp to pair with my Adcom?
Readthis, the ARC preamps I suggested will make the GFA-555 more transparent and closer to three dimensional. Will also extend the treble but it will be more refined (alot less noticable grain) & pull more detail from your recordings. Either t...
Preamp to pair with my Adcom?
Reedthis, when you say you want to smooth out the treble are you looking for a warmer sound or a more extended, refined sound?
Preamp to pair with my Adcom?
Pair the GFA-555 with anything but an Adcom preamp. One would think there is some synergy between Adcom components but I found that is not exactly true a few years ago. You want to make the GFA-555 really sing, pair it with an ARC preamp (the LS s...
Is it to much power?
I would prefer to slightly underpower speakers than overpower them. I have heard amps that overdrive speakers by sheer current delivery & the results in terms of sound quality was horrible! Speakers can be rated let's say at 200 watts but can ...
Conrad Johnson's Sonographe SA-250 or the SA-400?
Coffeey is 100% correct, there is no red warmup light that turns green on the SA-250 or SA-400. Both amps power on instantly and the light is red only.
Will leaving an amp powered-up all the time...
If you have very revealing speakers and a quality ss power amp, letting it warm for at least an hour definately makes an audible difference. I can understand Kkm's thoughts that this may be a design flaw but have come up with my own theories on th...
Harbinger of the future of 2-channel?
Sunfire didn't check with us before reaching a decision not to sell two channel! Audiophiles represent a small segment of the population so Sunfire must be appealing to the masses to sell more boxes.
Is 5 Watts enough for Horns ?
As long as it is tube watts and the speakers are efficient maybe 95 db and above, yours are extremely efficient at 107 db. From what I gather, 5 tube watts per channel are equal to about 15 watts of solid state power. I had a tube amp (push/pull) ...
What do you look for in damping factor?
I'm not sure you can equate a high damping factor with large amounts of global feedback in all instances. Digital amps may be the exception in that they have a high DF of a 1000 but they don't seem to suffer in sound quality, the lack of openess o...
