ALso...I am comparing the Quads more so to the monitor speakers in their price range...such as the Spendors,etc....than the Vandies 1cs...although my dealer carries both...which is why I am very familiar with each...and did an a/b with each as wel...
The triumph of mid-fi
Hi-end hardware is one thing...but we all know that newer hi-rez formats will be decided by the general public...not the hi-end audio crowd...and so far they have spoken...SACD and DVD-a are both busts....and not surprisingly....you need a very go...
Any opinions on NAD quality?
Nad makes great, affordable, "starter" hi-end gear...what more can one say? If u can afford better...by all means...go for it...but you will have to spend 3x the cost to surpass the Classic line of intergrated amps...which basically brings u to th...
JBL Monitors?
Although professional monitors have their strong points....imaging,transparency,detail,etc...they tend to sound very forward in comparison to hi-end consumer monitors...and typically dont offer much bass....
Magnapan vs. Von Schweikert
Well..I hope you have a dedicated room for the 3.6s...because they are huge....and ideally they need to be 3-4ft from all walls to perform at their best...I am not familiar with the VR4s...however...a friend has the Maggie 1.6s...which is more tha...
Upgrade from Spica TC-60's.
I recently upgraded from a pair of SPica tc-50s...and although their imaging and soundstaging abilities are impressive...over time their lack of detail, bass, and dynamics proved to be too much...some have mentioned adding a sub...and this is perso...
Box speakers that sound like Electrostats?
Joe...you are correct...the Quads are have 2 ports...both in the rear...so they are really intended for "free space" positioning...and dont get me wrong...I do like Spendors...and as you mentioned...on vocals,strings,acoustics,etc..in their limite...
New Speakers 1k
Well...dont get too caught up on specs,design,etc...let your ears be the judge...and suffice to say...specs can be misleading...the Vandy on "paper" is rated lower...but not by much...a difference of a few hertzs is just that...and the new Quad 12...
Small floorstander recommendations
ALso..for the type of music you specified...you are going to need deep bass...Epos,Triangles,SPendors,etc. are very lean in the bass category...do you plan on adding a sub? Another choice worth looking into: Vandersteen 1c or 2ce...about $500-800 ...
Small floorstander recommendations
My vote is for the original Kestral for around $700 used...still a great value...and a full range, phase correct speaker at that....I also like Dynaudio Audience floorstanders...especially the 62...transparent,nice out of box imaging, excellent ba...
Any opinions on NAD quality?
Nad sells alot of equipement...so I feel any "lemons" are grossly overexaggerated...but like I stated earlier...I would stick with their amps...as my dealer says..."these never come back"....
How much to spend to beat $1200 10yr old speakers?
If u like meadowlark kestrals.....try the Vandersteen 1c...virtually identical phase correct sound...for around $800....
Box speakers that sound like Electrostats?
Joe...also...in comparison...the spendors 3/5s sound "small" compared to my Quad 12Ls...but then again...the quad is over 4x the size...and in terms of "speed"...the Quads are not surprisingly "static like"...they really outperformed the small SPe...
New Speakers 1k
I also auditioned the SF Concertino...but they really need a sub...which is what I wanted to avoid...so for more full range sound...I opted for the Quad 12Ls....but I like clean deep bass...
How much to spend to beat $1200 10yr old speakers?
All things being equal...a ten yr old $1200 speaker should at least equal a newer $600 one...but I wouldnt get too caught up in price ...there are simply not that many good speakers in either price range...and both the $600 Paradigm Studio 20 and ...
