How much to spend to beat $1200 10yr old speakers?
For those on the west coast...I believe Gene Rubin carries the new Quad line...also...the Maggie qr12s...the ones just below the 1.6s...are a great speaker...and roughly 1200 usd...if you have the room...a must audition....

If you go Quad...go with the 12Ls...they have a much fuller presentation...and just to let u know...I would hesitate to call them bright... they are very revealing in nature...and sound nothing like rolled of SPendors or other "old-school" brit mo...

Precisely...all the benefits of tube "warmth" in the highs with tight,clean,bass from the SS power...am I the man or what? Jolida makes some decent hybrids...check out their website....if you want to go that route...

Maybe a tube pre, tight solid state bass power,coupled with Vandy boxless sound...I wouldnt get too wound up on SETs...there is only one Vandersteen...and a plethora of ways to incorporate tube sound...

Quad 12Ls do 45hz clean...probably closer to 40hz in a small room since this is Quads legendary conservative ratings....the best bass reflex design there is....

Rotel has actually had more recent reliablity issues than NAD...mostly pertaining to their 900 series intergrated amps...and my best local dealer...who carries Bryston,Bel Canto,etc...dropped Rotel in favor of the highly acclaimed NAD classic seri... 
Has anyone tried SET tubes amps with maggie 1.6's
This sounds like a fun "band-aid" solution...but as you already know...Maggies need power...and the SET aint gonna cut it....Bryston amps are know for emphasizing bass output...and they mate real well with Mags...good luck...
