First Tube Amp: Advice? Keep spare tubes on hand? One last thing: When you do blow a tube, it's not going to happen when you're running on the treadmill to "Night at the Roxbury". It's going to occur during an ethereal moment of musical epiphany. Be prepared!
First Tube Amp: Advice? Keep spare tubes on hand? By all means, once you've decided the amp is a keeper, follow Tvad's advice. I also recommend that you keep extra output fuses around; when I blow a tube, I blow a fuse. I can replace my tube locally but not the fuse.
Opinions on vintage cj amps and Teflon cap mods Hi Casouza, Your post helps tremendously. You addressed all of the issues in question. Ultimately, I have to make a decision and it would seem to come down to this: 1) Would I be better off trying to restore these amps to as close to original spec...
Best Diana Krall album...........is??? Heads-up Krall fans; if you're unfamiliar with Eliane Elias, I highly recommend that you check her out. You can sample her on Amazon.
Opinions on vintage cj amps and Teflon cap mods Mrtennis, I enjoy much of what this amp has to offer. I'm hoping I can improve it without altering its virtues. Think of it like buying a vintage house that you love for its woodwork and craftsmanship of a bygone era. Would it be inconsistent to t...
A look into classical This might seem off-the-wall, but it just can't be coincidence that most of my favorite classical recordings are on "Living Stereo" SACDs.
Opinions on vintage cj amps and Teflon cap mods Thanks again everyone,With your help, I've decided that the least I should do is try to hear some components that use teflon caps to try and identify their sonic signature in comparison with other capacitors and proceed from there. New "Astral Weeks Live" Philefreak, I couldn't agree with you more, that live music is where it's at; but not because of coughing, hoots, and hollers, but in spite of them. Besides, in your first post, you weren't comparing a live event with a studio recording, you were t...
Opinions on vintage cj amps and Teflon cap mods Thank you, every post makes excellent points. I wouldn't be considering a modification of this expense if I wasn't considering these amps as long term keepers; long...long term. This modification is very expensive ($1800+ per chassis) and would be...
New "Astral Weeks Live" "then you're not a music lover at all!"I'll probably regret not remaining silent, but this and similar statements that admonish others as not being "true (whatever),for having different preferences is...what's the word I'm looking for...oh yes, pe...
Which James Bond Theme Recording Whenever I feel that spy-thing coming on, I pull out my trusty old: "The best of James Bond 30th Anniversary edition". A nice 2cd set. It contains two versions of "Mr. Kiss-Kiss Bang Bang". While Dionne Warwick sings a nice song, Shirley Bassey si...
How is the power range determined? Recommended amplification for my current 91db speakers was 25-150W. I figured that 70 tube watts would be plenty; and it was, until I through 200 watts at them. I couldn't believe how much music I was missing. Another benefit is that my system bec...
Focal Diablo Utopia in HiFi+ It was an Einstein amplifier. I didn't ask which model, but somebody there told me it was rated at 85 watts. The room was also larger than what I suspect will be typical for this speaker.
