Speaker upgrade for classical music
I see a lot of good recommendations above. I don't see Ohm mentioned. These are great for 5.1 and normal 2-channel. I use them for both. The company has several combinations of HT setups well within your price range. They also have a long audition...
Please help with Ohm MWT sound/system issues
I believe djones51 has an appropriate recommendation. Looking at Ohm's website, you could go with either the WT-2000 or the Wt-3000. Position the speakers with tweeters angled inward. If you can, try to move the couch away from the back wall a bit.
Anyone ditch the sub after large speaker purchase?
The first thing that comes to mind is the LFE channel on movies. The subwoofers can be used for that. Even though I have "large" speaker settings for front and surround channels, my two subwoofers help even-out the low bass in LFE channel in the r...
"New device puts music in your head — no headphones required"
A beam-forming device will have off-target sound dropoff (directivity) and can be heard by others there, or behind you but in the same line-of-sight of the beam. Then there is still the question of how it can project a sound to one ear pointed at ...
Helping friends and relatives buy an audio system...
I helped my folks get their first real audio system, after they heard my stuff. Advised some friends here and there. But most people are not interested in great sound, just adequate sound with lots of convenience. Once in a while someone, like a n...
Are the new Ohm Walsh speakers Audiophile quality?
Ohm has a long audition period so you can really hear their performance over days, weeks, and a few months. In my experience, the sound is great right out of the box, but seems noticeably to improve the more you play them. Up to a point, perhaps a...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
I agree with mapman. If it is 7-8 grand for new drivers from Dale, I'd have gone for it before. Maybe it's worth a call to Dale even now. I still have the F cabinets.
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
The Ohm F is a acoustic suspension speaker system, which means the cabinet is a sealed box. Because of the sealed cabinet and no crossovers, the system should roll off at 12 dB/octave below the cutoff frequency. I think the foam stuffing so full i...
Will 12 inch subwoofer be enough for an 18x20 room (with 10 ft cielings)
In my limited (only) experience, one subwoofer added the LFE to the movies, but the low bass was localized to the left side of the room. The subwoofer was behind the left speaker. With two subwoofers, the LFE seems to come from all around the room...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
As for the internal cabinet wiring of the F, I bypassed it by directly attaching the speaker wire to the binding posts on the driver struts, and left the internal wiring unused.
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
If you do fix the surrounds on the F, your could then try an experiment that I did in the mid-'80s, with a musician friend. Remove the grilles. Have a friend listen to the same musical selection. Without him knowing or seeing what you do, remove t...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Doug, I did the surround because I really didn't have much choice. Either fix it or get it fixed so I can use the speakers. Again, it won't be like the original F, because the surround characteristics is different than what Ohm had. It will play, ...
Are the new Ohm Walsh speakers Audiophile quality?
Stringreen (a year ago), a friend had the early Ohm A's, in 1972. It was the most clear-sounding speaker I had ever heard. It was about as big as a small refrigerator, each. Then Ohm held a world premier event of that first Walsh speaker, not too ...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
My opinion on the stiffener on the spider is a no. Conceptually, stiffening the spider or surround causes the raising of the resonant frequency of the driver. The effect of that may raise the low cutoff frequency for the speaker, among other effec...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Doug, just saw your post. I was writing my previous response when you posted.Just to fill in some info, I found a few things that differ from the F vs the W5000 speakers, in my room. The F subjectively seems to go deeper in the bass than the W5000...
