Who remembers the Dahlquist DQ-10's?
Saw and heard these in the late '70s. Sounded very interesting and nice. If I recall, there were five drivers in each one, and a complex crossover too.
What tests would you like all speaker reviewers to do for their reviews?
As for the original question by the OP, I think we all need to agree on the objective of what a speaker should do. From what I read in textbooks before, the objective may be stated as, 'A speaker should reproduce the electrical signal received at ...
What tests would you like all speaker reviewers to do for their reviews?
@bdp24, I get your point. Sound is sound - pressure variations with respect to time. How it's processed by the ear, nerves, brain system is what we hear. Correcting a speaker for the hearing mechanism processing does not make sense to me, because ...
Why wont speaker companies publish their measurements?
To the OP, what measurements are you going to accept as true representation of the speaker?
Ceramic fuses
There are other factors that affected my test of speaker fuse vs wire. One is that the contact between the fuse holder and the fuse is different for a fuse configuration vs. a wire configuration. The original experiment was performed casually and ...
Hafler effect setup - any concerns for a "ParasoundZonemaster2350" p-amp (or in general)
I recall using the Quadaptor with Dynaco amps. It worked fine. After I upgraded to a more powerful amp that cautioned against going below 4 ohms load, I had to disconnect the Quadaptor. My speakers were 4 ohms and adding the Quadaptor with rear sp...
Ceramic fuses
Ricey, from all the discussion, it's clear that you are referring to a fuse in the power supply part of the amplifier. I've never tried different fuses in that location. I can't opine whether different fuses matter there. However, I have tried diff...
Hafler effect setup - any concerns for a "ParasoundZonemaster2350" p-amp (or in general)
This "Hafler" setup was sold earlier as the Dynaco Quadaptor, of Hafler design of course. Some Dynaco amps have this circuit built-in.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynaquadhttps://www.hifiengine.com/manual_library/dynaco/qd-1.shtmlThe amplifier mu...
We spend too much time talking about tweeters
kingharold is correct. Music is in octaves. If one considers the 3.5 kHz crossover, in a two-way system, the woofer then covers 7-1/2 octaves! If there is a midrange speaker crossing over from a woofer at say 250 Hz, the woofer then covers about 4...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Douglas, certainly you cannot compare your F's to the original F's, as none exist as a new F anymore. No one can be sure of its sound once the putty dries out, or the foam in the cone falls apart, as compared to a just-manufactured F speaker. Ther...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Douglas, the putty on the inner surface of the titanium section of the Ohm F cone will dry out over time. It is a known issue for older F's. The speakers will play but the treble sound from that part of the cone can be different. As an engineer, t...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Douglas, in the restoration, did they do anything to the 'putty' like stuff that's lining the inside surface of the titanium portion of the cone? I doubt they did that. If nothing was done, as it's difficult to do this, the sound will be audibly d...
Increasing bass on floor standing speakers
How did you determine that the bass is a little weak? Is it the balance of the mids to highs too much relative to the bass? Are there four walls or is one end of the long room open to another room? You may need to describe the room in more detail ...
Speaker crossovers
Mewsickbuff, the open baffle speaker I first encountered as a teen were the ones in the musical instrument amplifiers. Many lower priced ones are open back. Some of the more pricey ones have sealed boxes, or ported cabinets (bass-reflex). In theor...
Ohm Walsh F Hope of Resurrection
Been quietly following this thread, and glad that you got the F's fixed. There's been a lot of talk about the hair-trigger watt limit to blow up the F speakers. As long as you don't tempt fate, it should be fine. I've run my pair of F's for may ye...
