Speaker priority: high or low???
Of course, you'll disagree, Nrchy etc., but I am of the opinion that resolution is the result of accuracy, low distortion and low noise. Except for some amps that are rolled off on the bottom and top, and some that are just strangely designed, the...
My heart goes out to the families of Columbia
Good thoughts, Jcb. These men and women who we mourn today gave their lives in service. Six Americans, one Israeli, so it hits closer to home for Americans and Israelis, but the message would be the same regardless of nationality. Astronauts are v...
need ideas to raise speaker stands
As DK explained above, I don't believe in coupling, for good reason. But I don't use Blue Tak. I use cheap tacky stuff you get at hardware stores, only so the cleaning lady or an earthquake doesnt knock my speakers off their stands. Some speakers, ...
need ideas to raise speaker stands
Well, David, I don't actually use the styrofoam. I have tacky stuff between my speakers and the stands. One pair is on Harbeth wooden stands, though, and I'm thinking of trying the foam on the metal stands under the others. But, you're on point, of...
need ideas to raise speaker stands
Well, I disagree with Ken. Roller blade wheels are better than hockey pucks. There are all sorts of coupling devices, tiptoes? cone-like things. If that's what you want to do.
need ideas to raise speaker stands
Ok. Up to now this has been a closely guarded secret. Do you have any sheets of that porous-looking styrofoam-like material used in rectangular sheets to cushion components in shipping cartons? Some pieces are relatively sturdy and won't deform wi...
1950-2000: The 10 Greatest Songwriting Teams
To add two or three:Dan Penn (Pennington) and Spooner OldhamCharles Hardin Holley (Buddy Holly) and Norman Petty (though it is unclear how much credit Petty actually deserved)Lately, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings are amazing.
Best cover tunes
Craig, it was Dan Penn (with Chips Moman) and he is. To my everlasting chagrin, Irma Thomas did a cd recently in tribute to him ("My Hearts in Memphis, the Songs of Dan Penn") and didnt do Dark End of the Street. Don't know if she has ever recorde...
What do in store listening tests prove?
I buy stuff without hearing it anywhere. No problems. In-store - unless, as Tim says, the dealer can make it sound good, there's no reason to consider it. Listen nearfield. If not speakers, listen through speakers you know. In-store demos of speak...
1950-2000: The Top 25 Singer/Songwriters
I'll come back to this in a week, if it's still around, but some unmentioned names spring to mind, Merle Travis (yeah, his best work was pre-1950, but he was still doing stuff afterward), Lefty Frizzell, Buddy Holly, Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry along ...
Ok this will be a good thread.
Asa, all you said was "you're right, ohn," right after Onhwy61 said what he just said. I don't think I disagree with either of you at all. I just said that there are speakers that can make even great music unlistenable, just absolutely destroy it....
Ok this will be a good thread.
LOL. Let's see, up above, Onhwy61 says "great music is still great even on bad systems," with which Asa concurs. I'm not sure I would go that far, saying that really bad phono cartridges or really bad speakers can make even a good recording of a g...
Ok this will be a good thread.
From a speakers first guy, as I said above, record playing equipment, ie turntables, tonearms and cartridges can be as inaccurate and as idiosyncratic as speakers. And the bad cartridges and bad cartridge-tonearm interfaces have no charm, unlike s...
Ok this will be a good thread.
Speakers, unless you are using "source" correctly and referring to the records or cds that you are listening to. And then it would still be close. The simple reason is that speakers are much less accurate and have much higher levels of distortion ...
Willing to be proved wrong.
I'd go for a nice new inexpensive belt drive with an inexpensive cartridge. Don't overspend on the cartridge. Try a local dealer if you are near one. That way you can get some hands-on help if you need it. Or give the guys at the mail-order and on...
