How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
Another thought. All the posts above are about different points of view. Do you remember the song that went, "If you want to be happy for the rest of your life, never make a pretty woman your wife . . . So from my personal point of view, get an ug...
How do you determine how much to spend on speakers
Krazeeyk; Charlie (Danvetc), Tedmitz and Clueless above give good advice. Clueless is only wrong in thinking nobody will agree with him.Speakers are the least accurate hifi component (leaving phono cartridges out of the discussion since you say yo...
Hall of Shame
If everyone followed your advice, Makersmark, (and I do not find fault with it in any way, respecting even your point of view w/re cd players), this website would wither away and die.
best budget hi-fi speakers for my specific system
Dekay's recommendation makes sense. These speakers do take a while to break in, I think. Ezmeralda's comments about metal drivers are nonsense. - "this is why they just don't sound good" The AE-1 minimonitor was rave reviewed and has many fans who...
Hall of Shame
Will, well said. Doug, are you saying there's no room here for audiophiles who agree with what Ezmeralda said? Taking a line from one of Maxgain's posts above, there are some "very bright and serious people out there who are innovators in this ind...
CD player cleaning.
I use the compressed air directly on the laser (mine comes out in the drawer). And, yes, dirt on the lens will cause skipping. If the compressed air doesnt clear up the problem, it's likely an alignment problem.
Best Recordings I heard in 2001
Gotta get this thread going again. One more I forgot, an absolutely astonishing cd: Rodney Crowell, "The Houston Kid." Although the setting is the Eastside of Houston where Rodney grew up, it is NOT autobiographical, the characters and relationshi...
Do cables really need "breaking in"?
I meant to say "saying 'put up or shut' to someone" or "telling someone to 'put up or shut up'" was rude. Still is, even after the apology.I was just thinking how nice it was to have two recent threads, do cables sound different and how do you a/b...
Do cables really need "breaking in"?
You know, telling someone who is attempting to have a cordial conversation with someone else, and not trying to sell anything to him or anyone else is rather juvenile, i.e., childish and rude. The question was: do cables improve with breaking-in t...
Cartridge Longevity?
Utter nonsense and off topic. I bought my Blue Point from a dealer whose shop I walked into. And it's been fine for 2 years and low hours. Tony Cordesman included the earlier version of it in a survey for TAS and called it a Best Buy. Other writer...
Do cables really need "breaking in"?
Matt, cables do need to break in, for about 10 seconds. Consider, if cables need to burn in, what changes? And if you say they sound fine after, say 50 hours, do they stop changing by some miracle or do they keep burning out?For those who believe ...

Which monitor speakers are the most detailed...
Both Harbeths mentioned above are great. The Compact 7 has the the unusual midrange clarity/detail the result of the material used to make the 8 inch mid-woofer. Smaller than the Harbeth Compact 7, but bigger than a mini-monitor and still using th...
Audible differences between speaker cables?
Sugarbrie, I have auditioned and rejected cables in my home because I thought they sounded different from other acceptable cables. But I continue to believe that the differences between competently designed cables (and that's most of them) are tri...
Audible differences between speaker cables?
Or not. There are many many card carrying audiophiles, most of them with degrees in electrical engineering or some other technical field, who believe that all competently designed cables sound the same (actually dont sound at all). Some of them ar...
