Amp for Quad ESL 57 I've tried a number of different amplifiers and find that vintage English tubes is what they prefer. I'm currently using a Radford STA-15 that sounds wonderful. Leak Stereo 20 works as well but you will need to pot down the input.
Rec's for a dull sounding analog system Can you be more specific about "dull"? Is the stylus on the Benz possibly worn out? does the Monolithic provide sufficient gain and appropriate loading for your low-output moving coil cartridge?
External step-up transformer with Io or MP-1 I have tried an external stepup into the Io at its highest and second-highest attenuation. The results were not good - no synergy whatsoever. The Io is meant to be used as a fully active phonostage. If you want to use stepups, I'd look elsewhere.
LO MCs carts with RM-9/Shindo pre? The Denon will most definitely compete with the Blackbird in the right arm and with the right step-up.
LO MCs carts with RM-9/Shindo pre? The SPU is still made... in the G shell. The A shell was discontinued last year. Check Ortofon's site (ortofon.dk - really fun for browsing).I second the Denon recommendation, though you'll only be getting its best in a heavy arm.Yes, the stock tr...
LO MCs carts with RM-9/Shindo pre? Btw the Shindo built-in MC stage is optimized to work with SPUs... and does an amazing job with them. You can get the SPU GM Classic for about $650 these days I think.Of course you also need to figure out whether your Blackbird arm is up to contro...
LO MCs carts with RM-9/Shindo pre? Write to Jonathan Halpern and Tone Imports and ask him if the Koetsu would match well with the MC stage of the Monbrison. If not, he may be able to recommend a good step-up to place between the cart and the MM input on the Monbrison. Have all the ...
how good are Altec Peerless 4722 transformers? Yes. They are excellent.
step up for mc The key is to match the particular transformer load to a given cartridge. Don't expect to get just one pair of step-up transformers and expect to play around with tons of different carts. They might work well with a bunch of carts, but chances are...

Denon DL 103r What Preamp or Step up Old thread... I've long since ditched my Io Signature and moved on to the Auditorium 23 (plus Shindo preamp).
Shindo and synergistic components I've got my Monbrison with a Leak Stereo 20 power amp and Quad ESLs. Totally synergistic.
Reissue 180 grms vs original issue It's true, I haven't heard the Espana reissue.
Reissue 180 grms vs original issue I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with many of the above posters. Speaker's Corner has done occasional good work, but almost none of those records compare with original Mercury FRs or Decca wide-band deep groove pressings. Timbre, warmth, richness...
Best sounding VINYL labels? The basic problem is that you are searching for reissues. While there are occasional exceptions (the Speaker's Corner reissue of the Mercury Living Presence Starker's Bach Cello Suites comes to mind - though avoid their Mercury Respighi Birds like... |
