Built-in phono stages
The Shindo preamps all have built-in phonostages (except the very bottom Aurieges-L) that are absolutely world class.
Is RIAA equalisation enough for Phono Stages?
The Sentec is mono - however it can be used with mono modern cartridges and stereo setups - it has two inputs and two outputs. Via a toggle switch, you can use it for true mono, with the outer groove wall (typically the less damaged one) for prefe...
Is RIAA equalisation enough for Phono Stages?
Hi Tbg, it's an all-tube unit from Sweden with almost 100 curves available, built by a retired (but apparently legendary) audio designer - cut and paste this link:http://www.toneimports.com/sentec/sentec_eq10.htmlSo far it's been pretty revelatory...
Is RIAA equalisation enough for Phono Stages?
Tbg, thanks, but since I've got the Sentec now (and having a great time playing with it), I think I'm set for the moment!
My slow descent into retro MC madness...
re: older MCs and transformer loading. One of the best cartridges I ever owned was an original Ortofon SPU G-T. These had tiny transformers built into the headshell, making them extremely heavy. I was able to balance it on my old Ortofon RS-212 ar...
My slow descent into retro MC madness...
Don't worry about the list price for the cartridge, that's just a distraction. Quality is quality. You're getting the right step-up. Now get the right arm. You'll be golden.
Stand out phono stages
Sirspeedy - on that note, if someone wants to experiment with a high-quality tubed phonostage with adjustable EQ (and more flexibility than the Zanden), have a look at the Sentec EQ-10. I just got one of these and have been having a blast playing ...
Is RIAA equalisation enough for Phono Stages?
The EMT JPA-66 looks absolutely gorgeous. I love their arm and cartridges and would love to hear it.On a cheaper note, I've got the Sentec EQ-10 tube phonostage coming from the same (US) distributor. It's made in Sweden and allows many variations ...
tube amps with El 34s your favorites ??
Depends what speakers you're driving, as always... amp and speakers are a system, as Art Dudley memorably pointed out in Stereophile a few issues back. That said, I really love my Radford STA-15, driving Quad ESLs.
Top ten tube preamps

Tonearm recomendations
We're not saying a tonearm is a tonearm... just that with your turntable you should be able to mount any arm that you want.My personal faves are the 12" arms based on the classic designs of the '60s... original Ortofons or SMEs, or more recently S...
Stand out phono stages
I'm kind of amazed not to see any Shindo mentioned here... perhaps because there is no standalone phonostage in the line (though one is rumored to be in production). Shindo's phono sections are built into his full-function preamps, old-style, and ...
Tonearm recomendations
Sorry, I was a bit flummoxed by the question. You can use any arm you like on a Rek-o-kut. Most arms will mate to most turntables - it's the arm-cartridge interface (and cartridge-phonostage interface) that brings up more variables. The only except...
Largest Impact - Arm or Cart?
The arm + cart form a SYSTEM. The most important aspect is how the arm and the cartridge work together. Price is not necessarily the best way to approach this conundrum, either.
New analog system disappoints, please help
In general good responses so far. Cartridge loading is a relatively subtle matter and while it's important to get it right, it's not going to make the huge difference you're looking for.I'd carefully look at your VTF - is it correct? I would err o...
