What's the deal with idler turntables and do they have a place in modern HiFi?
I havent heard your TTs yet Thom. Would love to hear it some day.

Thom and Lewm, when I brought out the high mass vs low mass platter thing, the idea was not say one was superior over the other. Rather I wanted to point out that while high mass is a "workaround" for the torque generation in belt drive systems ul...
How many will listen to tape and vinyl in the next century?
And thats the worry, the shortage of good LPs.

There is also a price to pay when the platter is massive. Light weight platters have been preferred by any "well-designed" TT designers for the same reason. I am yet to hear any belt drive turntable sound like a direct or Idler drive in resolving ...

After 100 years the main problem will be to find high quality original pressings. Most reissues are average sounding and they may not be able to carry the game of analog forward. We need seriously good sounding vinyls in plenty numbers in order to...
Bi-amping Rules
If you bring in the tonality aspect it gets even more complex. Imagine the lower notes of the piano coming from one amplifier and the higher notes from another amplifier of a different make (which means different voice)! Ultimately it will also me...
Bi-amping Rules
In the case of passive biamping, i.e., biamping without an electronic crossover "ahead" of the power amps, it is of course correct that what has to be matched in some manner is the gain of the two amps (gain being the ratio of an amplifier’s outpu...

What makes an amp sound more direct ?
apparently you've never heard a good OTLThat would be incorrect because most solid state amps are OTL. I also owned the Tenor 75 OTL.
What makes an amp sound more direct ?
unsound, I am talking about directness of a system. If you have listened to some horn speakers you will relate to it. They may not sound forward but horn speaker have a way to convey the music in a very focussed way. That aspect also happens in th...
What makes an amp sound more direct ?
jmcgrogan2, it is not exactly a soundstage phenomenon per se. Immediacy...yes. Direct sound is a bit self-explanatory already, the way the sound is directed to the listener. The listener actually feels a touchy-feely with the instruments in the ro...
Tube Phono Stage with balls, and slam!!
Check out the latest reference offering of Luxman, the EQ-500. Art Dudley seems to be mighty impressed by this one:http://www.stereophile.com/content/luxman-eq-500-phono-preamplifier
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
Does this plinth-tonearm arrangement represent "closed loop" solution ?http://www.ebay.com/itm/112016969322
Tonearm mount on the plinth or on Pillar ?
The Resomat is indeed a contrarian design in that it specifically decouples the LP from the platter, whereas most platter mats make an attempt at coupling to facilitate the dissipation of spurious energy delivered into the vinyl by the passage of ...
