I feel bad for GenX'ers that missed out on the 60s and 70s. What younger folks miss not being there to hear the albums in real time is how bands from The Beatles onward developed and grew musically as their careers progressed. From I Wanna Hold Your Hand to A Day In The Life was only a four year span calen...
Who is ditching their shiny disc spinners? Hard drives crash and you can't back up everything. Cloud services change owners or even worse just vanish. Meanwhile, I have a radio station's worth of CDs, SACDs, some vinyl and an OPPO and Onyko for the digital and a Music Hall turntable for th...
What’s up with Magnepan service? There are significant US supply chain issues for just about anything you can think of due to higher fuel costs and a shortage of truck drivers as well as manufacturing issues overseas. And the shortages of computer chips (I know not used in Maggie...
As you have moved on, are there any items you remember fondly...or most fondly? SME III 3009 tonearm and Dynavector MC cartridge foolishly given away when I believed the perfect sound forever bs of compact discs...
Buying used vs new? I bought my amp new but NAD pre-amp, Oppo, Maggies, turntable and cables all "pre-owned" as the phrase goes. One advantage not mentioned of buying used is if you got a component you thought you'd like but it turned out you didn't, you can bail out...
Speaker Cables? why all the hype for expensive speaker wire? Different sounding isn't always the same as better sounding, or more detailed, or... etc. Expectation bias expecting differences doesn't guarantee superiority, it just means not the same as what it's replacing.
Marty Stuart on Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers: As much as I enjoy Petty’s music, in terms of quality, the 3 American Bands (sorry, as much as I admire The Band, they’re not American) I’d submit are, in no particular order, Los Lobos, Little Feat and, on the great nights, the Grateful Dead. The...
Do You Ever Find Yourself Unable to Listen To Your System? I have a couple of go to albums for when times get a bit rough and they usually always get me a few steps up from the bottom of the barrel. Do you have any (for want of a better word) healing music in your collection? Keith Jarrett’s Koln Concert ...
Great Recordings, Sonically Speaking - and Why. I would suggest just about every Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab release, even better on SACD than cd in case you don't already have the vinyl. Same with just about every release on ECM, regardless of format.
Old Amps that can still Kick Butt Hafler DH-220 bought new in 1984 for $329 - which is what a used version is worth today. Still drive my MG-1.5QRs very well.
Stratospheric audio gear prices Clearly there are people on this thread who have no concept of retail pricing. I’ve managed hardware and jewelry stores, and spent 2 decades as a territory manager specializing in adjusting retail prices based on price sensitivity and turnover. Th...
Why don't more recordings have soundstage outside of speakers I used a pair of Spica TC-50s on stands for years and thought they imaged well. Replaced them with a pair of Magneplanar MG-1.5QRs and the imaging is other worldly - perhaps too much at times but quite entertaining (and revealing) .
eBay / PayPal: Beware - enough is never enough. I've successfully sued Paypal in small claims court twice and won. Judges see lots of these types of shenanigans and don't like it very much. The 2nd time, the judge actually implied I should have asked for more in damages...

Samsung flat screen TV’s This is the best reply - we've had a pair of Samsungs - one for over 10 years and a larger 4K for 8 with no problems at all. Reading online and in the manuals led us to changing the picture level from the factory settings that shorten the tv's liv... |
