help me build a cheap second system
You want cheap good sound? Okay, here goes:Sherwood 7100 receiver. Available in thrift stores (I paid $20.00 for mine). You can pick these up on Ebay for 50 bucks or so. If you like tube sound get the 7100. If you prefer solid state get the 7100A....

Refurbish a Dynaco St70
My first home experience with tubes was a ST-70 and a PAS-3 that I bought at a garage sale for four dollars each. No joke, and it was at the end of the day too. Those two pieces sat on a table at that garage sale all day and no one bought them. Go...
5 Favorite Concerts
Growing up in Southern California, and being into music since I was a toddler, I took advantage of some of the jazz clubs as a teenager back in the 1950's. My favorite memories are the nights my buddy and I spent listening to Howard Rumsey and the...
The Best Live album
Pick up a copy of John Williams and Julian Breem on RCA. Its a two record set that will blow you away ... if you like classical guitar. This is the one you'd be looking for: http://www.ebay.com/itm/JOHN-WILLIAMS-AND-JULIAN-BREAM-Live-DBL-LP-Classi...
New Audio Research Reference 150 SE
Bifwynne ...From one "schmuck" to another *lol* ... my new REF-75se is supposed to ship tomorrow. Should have it by Thursday. See the new thread I started on this issue.Happy listening ...
ARC REF 5SE Cover Warping
The acrylic tops will warp. The key is to leave at least 8 inches clearance on the top of the amp. The problem is, people are jamming their amps into shelving with only a couple of inches clearance causing the heat to pool in the center of the acr...
Audio Research REF 75 vs VAC Phi 200
Bifwynne ...Yes, its the CD-7 with the upgraded power supply and tube upgrades. Big jump in sound over the stock CD-7. In fact, quite amazing. I have it on good authority that the newer CD-6 is more analog-like ... and it has no tubes. Dbarger ......
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
2005 Lexus LS-430 that just turned 60,000 miles. And yes, of course ... it has the Mark Levinson sound system in it.
Do we still need 6550 or KT88 tubes?
I recently replaced the KT 120's in my ARC REF-75 with the KT-150's. Night and day! Highly recommended for this amp.
ARC Phono Ref 2 SE - Dealer Demo Unit Worth Price?
I've traveled down the ARC Phono stage road from the PH-3 right through the PH-8 that I am presently using. Contrary to an earlier poster in this thread, in my system, the PH-8 made the PH-7se and all of its predecessors it replaced sound broken. ...
cartridge demagnetization
I demag my cartridges. Has anyone noticed that it takes a few sides to smooth out after demagnetizing your cartridge. It always sounds a little bright to me at first, and then things settle down and sounds great.
Anyone into cassettes?
It really is amazing how good a well recorded cassette sounds considering how slow the tape moves. A good vinyl record recorded from a high end system onto a cassette tape can sound amazing.
Tonearm: Well Tempered Lab LTD MK2
I have an original WT tonearm. In fact, its one of the very first that Bill Firebaugh built. I've was the second owner, being the first to take it out of the box. I've rewired it with Cardas tonearm wire and dampened the tube with one layer of shr...
Audio-Technica AT-ART9 phono cartridge
Thank you Pani for an excellent response to my opening post. You've pretty much made the decision for me. I love the sound of my OC9 Mk III, so a step up to the ART9 should be just the ticket. As a side note, the OC9III is superb on mono records. ...
