Retubing an ARC VT100 mkll
Call ARC and buy a set of their new 6550s. I replaced the power tubes in my REF-PH8 and my REF-3 with these tubes. At first listen, there was a blacker background with much better definition and separation. Once broken in ... amazing.
Audio Research Preamp Experts?
I had the SP-14 for many years and really enjoyed it thoroughly. At the time, I was mostly a vinyl guy ... guess I still am. On a good night, with the lights out, the entire back wall would just disappear and the sound stage seemed to have limitle...
Audio Research Ph8 compared to Reference phono 2
Bifwynne ..I went from the PH-7 to the PH-8. The PH-8 makes the PH-7 sound broken. No lie. If you go to the PH-8 be sure to get the new 6550 tube that ARC is offering. Major upgrade right there. If you can afford the Ref-2SE ... that's the one to ...
Audio Research Ph8 compared to Reference phono 2
Clabe ...I have the PH-8 and love it! It needs the new 6550 power tube to sound its best, so be sure to include it. With this tube upgrade, it gets the PH-8 pretty close to the Ref-2 ... but not the Ref-2SE. Of course, you still won't have all of ...
Audio Research, next upgrade?
Get the ARC PH-8 with the latest 6550, a good turntable and cartridge, then start shopping garage sales and thrift stores for the vinyl. For the cartridge, I'd recommend the Audio Tecnica OC9 MKIII. This cartridge is very quiet, great on old mono ...
Ticking noise in Audio Research Reference CD7
Amuseb ...ARC has all the tubes you need in stock. Also, as others have said, the power supply upgrade is well worth the nominal cost. Get the upgrade and new tubes at the same time. Hmm ... I wonder what the shipping cost will be from France?
Mapleshade boards under speakers
Back again ...Using the maple platforms under my speakers has transformed the bass response. There is no way I would ever return to the speakers just spiked through the carpet again. Just as an aside ... Audiogon, please return the font to that pr...
audio research REF 150
I called arc on an unrelated topic and spoke with one of the techs and he said that the Ref 150 driving the new Maggie 3.7s is simply amazing. The REF 150 is on my Xmas list if business improves by then. :)
What I learned on Audiogon This Year
I learned to NEVER answer the question: "what's your bottom line?" If you reveal the bottom line, that's where many Audiogoners want to start the negotiations. Therefore, when asked for the bottom line, I will always, in the future, answer: "make ...
Mapleshade boards under speakers
OK, my unfinished 15 x 18 x 2 Mable Shade maple speaker platforms arrived and I set them up using long brass cones coupling the platforms to the floor through the carpet. The speakers were coupled to the platforms using the speaker's built in bras...
Audio Research REF 3 and REF 5 Tweaks
Sgr:I heard an improvement in overall air with no degradation in the bass at all. I removed the top covers in both my Ref 3 and the new PH-8. By the way ... the PH-8 now has 220 hours and is killer! According to my trusted source, the PH-8 will co...
Mapleshade boards under speakers
Good thread ... I tried an experiment the other day: I have (and love) a pair of Legacy Sig IIIs. I was using just the speaker spikes driven through the carpet into the wood (raised) floor. I had two 12"x12"x2" marble platforms that consist of two...
Maple Shade Recordings?
Old thread but a good one. If you like bluegrass, try the Maple shade recordings.
Well Tempered Turntable Specifications
Another option is to buy a used original WT and buy all of the tweaks and upgrades sold for it. I've enjoyed my WT since the 80s and when its set up right its hard to beat. The belt is critical, so count on a new belt every year. As the belt stret...
Audio Research REF 3 and REF 5 Tweaks
I've been told by a trusted friend that removing the covers from the ARC preamp and the phono stage is a significant improvement. I'll try it tomorrow and report back. I have a couple of audio enthusiasts coming over for a listening session so we ...
