Is this a reasonable Audiophile Mac-based Server?
Regardless of what sounds better, wireless is not as reliable as wired connections. I have two wireless systems, one a Squeezebox and the other an Airport Express, they usually works flawlessly, but sometimes they just won't.
Marian McPhartland - A National Treasure
I couldn't have said it better.Trivia -- in Art Kane's 1958 photo she stands between Oscar Pettiford and Mary Lou Williams. Sonny Rollins is in sunglasses right behind her.
The most important link in the chain...
It's not external, YOU are the most important link. Your intelligence, sophistication and ambition mated with your sense of hearing will be a greater determinant of how successful a musical experience you can create than any component. It's what y...
Apple Lossless Encoder - Audiophile Quality?
If you follow Ckorody's logic you could just as easily conclude that you should use Apple's uncompressed format, AIFF (which does support tag info).Regarding the cost of hard drives -- TB sized drives can be had for less than $350. In the audiophi...
Apple Lossless Encoder - Audiophile Quality?
The only reason to go with any of the lossless compressed formats is hard disk space considerations. With the cost of large hard drives ever plummeting is that really a compelling reason to go that route?
Apple Lossless Encoder - Audiophile Quality?
AIFF supports metadata.
Heard my friend's system, thinking of leaving hifi
Deal with it, accept it and go on and have a happy life. One of the nice things about being an audiophile is that when you are bested nobody cuts off your head and parades it through the center of town on a stick to the cheers of the crowd. None o...
Apple Lossless Encoder - Audiophile Quality?
Apple lossless is a bit for bit encoding process that many claim is indistinguishable from the original file. That said, why use data compression at all? Use AIFF.
Beolab 5 - Four Questionable Technologies
Hdomke, one of the issues that comes up in high end audio is system synergy. A great system functions better than the sum of its components. Speakers like the Beolab greatly simplify the issue. If you were to purchase a speaker like the B&W or...
Beolab 5 - Four Questionable Technologies
Shadorne, excellent post! Do you now understand why I referred to it earlier as a high end lifestyle product? It's certainly not cheap, but for the money you get a lot of product (speakers, amps, EQ and digital conversion) in what some consider an...
DIY CD Compression?
What type of audio system is in your car. Some have automatic volume controls that adjust to the in-car noise level. Check you owner's manual.
cantelever not straight, advise please.
It may or may not be a problem. It really depends on how out of true the cantilever is. Raul gives the best advice, IMO. As far as resale goes, who in their right mind would purchase a twice owned cartridge without the expectation that it would ne...
life without audio dealers
Mrtennis, if the audiophile world were to devolve into small manufacturers directly marketing their products, then how many electrostatic speakers do you think would be on the market? Small may be beautiful but it's not particularly economically e...
Beolab 5 - Four Questionable Technologies
Shadrone, interesting speculation, but you need to listen to the speakers. In theory many, many speakers don't work (metal dome tweeters, full range drivers, ported bass alignments, etc.), but that never stopped manufacturers from making excellent...
life without audio dealers
If you can't reliably and repeatedly extrapolate the listening evaluation from a dealer's showroom to your own system it implies that the sonic differences between equipment is very small yet somehow still critical, which is something of a contrad...
