ok to break in phono preamp w/ non lp source?
Phono preamps are not designed to accept line level signals. Line level signals are in volts while phono level signals are in millivolts. Whether the difference will actually damage your phono pre depends upon the design. Do you feel lucky?
Scaling down
After a certain dollar point, or just being an audiophile for a few decades, the idea of scaling up or downward loses its meaning. I think most people eventually realize they can truly enjoy listening to music on a wide range of equipment. Particu...
Magnepan Service HORRIBLE???
It's summertime and people take vacations. Five weeks isn't a long time for a problem to be addressed. Magnepan's a fairly small company with a very good reputation, except about product deliveries. They can be slow.My advice is to stay on top of ...
rear firing tweeters....
The explanation I heard was to balance out the speaker's power response such that the tonal balance of the room reflected sound better matched the direct sound at the listening position. A rear firing tweeter is not the only way to achieve this goal.
Nothing but speakers in the listening room?
Assuming it makes sense to get the equipment out of the room, then wouldn't the most affected equipment be the source components? So why are they still in the listening room?
What is a high end stereo SUPPOSED to sound like?
If you need a high end system to feel the soul present in music, then something is wrong. I'm not exactly sure what's wrong, but I know it's wrong, very wrong.
A mystery for you tech gurus out there
Is it possible that someone needs to brush up on their Dale Carnegie? The question does assume that the person wants to be liked by others. Anyway, here's a brief synopsis of some of Mr. Carnegie's most core techniques.Fundamental Techniques in Ha...
How does one get off the merry-go-round?
It's not that specs insure a good sounding match, but that they can point out a less than optimal, or even bad matching. For speakers you really need to look at the actual graph of their impedance with phase angles.Regarding your earlier long post...
What is a high end stereo SUPPOSED to sound like?
I understand the point made above on speculating about a recording and drawing conclusions about neutrality. I've talked with recording engineers about records and been amazed about the insights they have into how they think the recording was made...
Laserdiscs- how do they sound with outboard DACs
It depends on the outboard D/A. The Pioneer Elites had good D/As to begin with, at least for that time period.

Sabai, there's this technology out there called the internet that allows people to dig up what other people previously said.
How to get the impact of a live concert?
Marakanetz, please explain how the Aerials do 140dB.
Amp preamp impedance matching...can anyone explain?
I too have heard the 10x ratio, but are not there some companies that preach a transmission line approach? I have seen references to a 600 ohm standard in older studio equipment.
