Modern Linestages
My preference is for an active preamp but done as simple as possible. I chose CJ's ART and ACT 2.2 for my pres "first" because I like the way they sounded and "second" because of their design: Class A, only one gain stage, no negative feedback, an...
Zu Druid MK IVs vs. Essences
Charles1dad,I agree with a lot of what you say in your posts. Your post above reminded me of a "paper" I read several years ago. Here's a link. http://homepage.mac.com/tlinespeakers/vaughn/downloads/SE-v-PP-Part1.pdfIt's very balanced and I think ...
Hafler DH 500 update?
"Tube in contrast seem to retain there dynamics at a lower volume level..Does anyone else feel the same?"I do, and the lower I go, the more "single ended" seems to be the best. There are exceptions of course. I was surprised at how good my ss Pass...
Do powercords make a difference in sound?
Foster_9 and Jedinite24, Good points. I have tried the "newer" Volex's that came with some amps I bought. They do not sound like my older brass bladed ones. The newer ones are a little skinnier (still 14/3 though) and have a nickel plated plug. Ni...
Do powercords make a difference in sound?
It's kinda like:Does having a dog make a difference? As you go door to door around the neighborhood talking to people, you get answers like:Yes. A lot. They are part of our family. He/she is my best friend.A little. I seem to be a little happier an...
XA 30.5 or mod S/500?
"Anyone heard SA/1s AND heard XA 30.5?"I had a pair of SA/1's in my house for a month awhile back. They are wonderful amps, even by today's standards. I have owned the 30.5 for about 2 yrs now and have no plans to sell it. I'd recommend the 30.5 u...
Preamps suitable for CJ ACT2 Series 2 preamp.
Audioblazer,The ACT 2.2's unity gain (where you are neither boosting or attenuating the signal) is 76. Anything under 76 and you are attenuating the signal. I'd say you are in the normal range.
Preamps suitable for CJ ACT2 Series 2 preamp.
With my ACT 2.2, I have used a variety of amps. Pass XA.5's, Bedini 45/45, several SETs, push pull tube, even a Tripath based Red Wine Audio 30.2. All have worked fine. The ACT's 500 ohm output impedance (average) is pretty low for a pure tube prea...
Lamm 2L Reference vs CJ GAT
Hi Lloydelee,I have read Myles thoughts about the GAT and know he loves it. At this level, I think it gets very personal and of course there is the amp/speaker/room interface so even the same person might prefer one of these top pres over another ...
Lamm 2L Reference vs CJ GAT
Jafant, I agree with you about the ACT 2.2. Mine seems to keep sounding better and better as it ages.Lloydelee21, I "think" I agree with you too (about the ACT 1). I say think because while I never heard the original ACT 1, I did have a CT-5 which...
Favorite 300B: Sophia vs KR
Agree with Charles1dad, I have one amp that a 6sn7 change was more noticable than 300b tube rolling.
McIntosh 2505 Power amp
The C28 would be of the same generation as the 2505. The C33 would be one of my favorites for vintage Mac, knobs would match though.I would personally go for a newer C15 or C712. Good luck.
Pass Labs:What to expect fm XA60.5 to XA100.5
Pubul57,I too have found that smaller wattage amps will generally have a sweeter/purer sound. In decision making, I always go by my ears first then work backwards with my brain to see if there is a reason for a finding, but always ears first as th...
SS amps with little or NO feedback
How about the Pass X series? Try for the X.5 if you do. They are cheaper ($ for watt) and more powerful than their XA series. They have a nice white paper about the Super Symmetry circuit here. http://www.passlabs.com/pdfs/articles/susy.pdfFWIW, I...
Mcintosh MC500 or Accuphase P800
"I did hear the MC1000 but I do not know if the MC500 would be as good..."The 500 would be almost as good as the 1000's. (I owned them both at the same time.) Basically if you liked the 1000's, you'll like the 500 so, short of getting to listen to...
