Old Amps that can still Kick Butt Pioneer SPEC-4 I purchased in the early 80’s. Last year, I gave it and my beloved DCM TimeWindow 3 speakers, and some other gear to my son.McIntosh MC2600 I purchased in the late 90’s. Been sitting unused for about 2 years. Probably time to sell...
eBay / PayPal: Beware - enough is never enough. I only use US Audio Mart and this site for selling stereo equipment over $250, and only sell to people with close to 100% favorable reviews. I also look at their number of transactions. Knock on wood, I've never had a PayPal problem. I rarely u...
Magico compared to Tannoy Over the last 40 years, I’ve owned several systems that I still have in my rec room. Three years ago, I decided to build a dedicated listening room and started with a pair of Tannoy DC8Ti speakers. I bought them used in like new condition for le...
Keeping backup equipment? I keep a PS Audio Stellar Gain Cell DAC and NAD M22v2 amp as backup to my main system. Over the last year, I've used them at different times when I sent in my BHK pre amp and BHK 250 amp for service. The M22v2 sounds pretty good in my main syste...

Detecting “Dirty” Power I installed the HumDinger; it made no difference. I replaced my VooDoo power cord with a new GR Research power cord. Each day when I first turned on my system, I put my ear close to the tubes and could hear a faint hum. After about 30 minutes, ...
Class D amps that are superior to all or most? In my listening room, I started with a NAD M12 pre amp/NAD M22v2 amp combo and Tannoy DC8TI speakers. It took me a while to get the gain setting right, but once I did the sound was nice. The bass was great, mid range was good, but, depending on r...
Detecting “Dirty” Power @lowrider57 There is no hum thru the speakers, and I can only hear it up close. PS Audio tells me there’s nothing wrong with the amp, so I will believe them. I ordered the Humdinger. Can’t wait for it to get here 😀
Detecting “Dirty” Power @gloriousunicorns I'm using Silnote XLR cables from my BHK pre to the 250 and Transparent Super XLR cables from the BHK pre to my DirectStream Sr. DAC. I use Tungsram 7dj8 tubes in my pre amp and 250. I've tried 3 different sets of Tungsram...
Detecting “Dirty” Power I unplugged everything but the 250 and changed power cords. Slight hum is still there. I ordered the HumDinger. I'll follow-up after I try it.
Detecting “Dirty” Power Thanks everyone for the suggestions. My breaker box is in my basement listening room. I have a dedicated 20 amp line connected to the box. Connected to the PS Audio receptacle's top plug is my Denali power conditioner. Everything but my 250 is...
Are Preamplifier’s Relevant Today or just a Hinderance with Digital Playback ? @yyzsantabarbara My streaming path is Cardas Ethernet to an Innous Zenith MK2 via WireWorld USB cable to a Matrix X via a cheap .5 meter HDMI cable to my DAC. I hear a clear and distinct SQ improvement using the Matrix as opposed to going direct...
Are Preamplifier’s Relevant Today or just a Hinderance with Digital Playback ? At this point in my life, I listen less to vinyl and do more streaming. My digital rig sounds really good to me, and while my vinyl rig sounds better it’s not by much. A while back, I was considering selling my Technics 1200G and Herron VTSP-2A(r0...
My NAD 3020 D proves your Class D tropes are wrong I have four power amps: NAD M22v2 (Class D), PS Audio BHK 250 (Hybrid Class A), McIntosh MC 2600 (Class A), and Pioneer SPEC-4 (Class A). My vintage Mac and Pioneer amps work well in my rec room, but not so much in my listening room. In my liste...
What phono preamp are you using? I went from a Parasound JC3 Jr., to Herron VTPH-2A, to PS Audio Stellar. With a 1200G and Ortofon Quintet Black. Surprisingly to me, the Herron and PS Audio were basically a toss-up. The Stellar is dead quite and sounds great. |
