Replace tubes yearly?
@n80 yes, tube rolling = trying different types of tubes. Sorry for using lingo without explaining it. I have done some TR, particularly with a Woo WA6SE headphone amp. The stock power tube was not the best. Splurged on a WE422 based on recommend...
Replace tubes yearly?
Short answer: No. Having a second set of tube around to periodically (anywhere between once a year to every 5 years) check whether you notice something, can be considered. But a yearly schedule is nonsense. If anything, it depends on numbers of h...
I'm new to Step Up Transformers
I recently purchased a Zesto SUT for an EAT eglo petite tube hybrid MM/MC phono stage. The overall sound from the Rega Aphelion2 cart is fuller with the SUT with MM gain settings compared to without SUT and higher gain on PS. The SUT adds a bit of...
Question about loading with an SUT
I have a Zesto SUT with adjustable ratios and loadings going into a EAT eglo petite also with adjustable gain and loadings for an Aphelion2 cart (and previously a Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC*). In both cases the recommended loadings sounded best to my ...
So much Bach, where do I start?
If you don't like harpsichord AND organ, that does not leave a lot of Bach, maybe the 'cello suites,  However, I strongly suggest to stay away from modern interpretations, say replacing harpsichord with piano on Brandenburgs. That is a crime agai...
Why do records made from digital sources sound good?
@kennyc When I was building my audio chain, I demoed the best I could find at brick n mortar and major audio shows. At audio shows, you listen to whole system performance. Isolating a specific piece is rarely possible, particularly, hearing mul...
HAVE CABLES EVER TAKEN YOUR SYSTEM FROM SOUNDING JUST OK TO SOUNDING GREAT? Experiences ?
I have not heard any differences in any cables I ever tried. Based on my experience and demonstrated experimentation, not preconceived notions, I don't think cables make any difference.
Thinking about buying new Grado Headphones
My first "decent" headphones were Grado R2e (modded with Beautiful Audio cups and headband), after listening through the entire series of Grado headphones at the time (around 6 years ago). I went for Grado because of a whole lot of news stories ab...
Rega Naia Aphellion 2 phono preamp
@superhonestben Thanks for all the details. OK the GH elevator is a step up transformer. I use a Zesto Alesso SUT, and it sure makes a difference in sound with the Aphelion2, more full bodied. Played around quite a bit with setting on the Zesto al...
Vacuum Tube Preamp for Solid State Power Amp Pairing
I pair my PrimaLuna EVO 300 pre (not integrated) with a PassLabs XA25 SS and happy with it. PL has been mentioned before in this thread.
Can we make major musical discoveries at age 50, 65, or 80?
@stuartk adolescent: approx age 15-25, frequently a formative period for music taste.  yummy phase: easy digestible/ingestible ware. In food it is Mac 'n cheese, pizza, schniposa & coke. In music it is Beatles, Stones, PF, Eine Kleine Nachtmu...
Shameless Poll: Pearl vs Ohm vs Zu
@yogiboy Ps. Here is my longer impression https://pearlacoustics.com/daniel-geiger/ If you want to audition them ask Harley whether there is an owner near you. If you are in socal lmk.
Shameless Poll: Pearl vs Ohm vs Zu
@yogiboy purchased direct, not sure there are any dealers. Another plus is the best interaction with Harley Lovegrove, owner of Pearlacoustics. Prices seem to have gone up significantly. I think I got them for around us$4k, now they are 8k ish. Pr...
Rega Naia Aphellion 2 phono preamp
@superhonestben thanks for this. never seen it before. What have you used before? What cartridge are you using on P8/Mofi? I notice there are no capacitance settings on the Whest, so no adjustability for MM carts. Also not sure whether the dip s...
Shameless Poll: Pearl vs Ohm vs Zu
@yogiboy As noted above, I have a pair of Sibelius since early 2021. See post above re description and pros/cons. BTW: RYT200/yin
