Does UPS ever open and inspect packages?
One of the best values (for anything over $500 that won't fit in a USPS Priority flat rate box,) is FedEx's "Express Saver" 3rd day air service. It's about 50% more than FedEx Ground (and WELL worth it!) HOWEVER you will not see it on their website...
Ungrounding an Amp--Any Danger?
Zaikesman, re the van den Hul "screened" (shielded) coaxial products: There are only two unbalanced cables which are spec'd. for audio signal transfer, and both of them use vdH's proprietary non-metallic "Linear Structured Carbon" as the shield. S...
Ungrounding an Amp--Any Danger?
Also, a word about "shielded" power cords. Manufacturer supplied power cords, if they are shielded (and most aren't) must have the shield connected at both the AC plug end and the equipment (or IEC plug) end. That is a UL underwriting requirement....
Ungrounding an Amp--Any Danger?
Bob, I'm afraid you are incorrect about "unbalanced" ICs. First of all, the correct terminology is "single-ended" ICs. Some single-ended ICs have a coaxial configuration, where the shield is indeed used for a signal carrier, but they are usually o...
Ungrounding an Amp--Any Danger?
Joe, I'm not sure you're right about grounding thru the amp. Yes it will provide a single ground path, but I understood that "star grounding" is when each component (or each device on a circuit board or chassis) has it's OWN shortest path to the g...
Ungrounding an Amp--Any Danger?
Your preamp should be the only grounded component to achieve the lowest noise floor. The other components drain to ground through the interconnects, to the preamp, and then through the preamp's grounded power cord.Danger will then be present if yo...
Does UPS ever open and inspect packages?
Someone could've been looking to steal your stuff. It happens all the time. And don't let the "inspection resealing tape" fool you. Who do you think does the inspections? ;--) Just be glad they didn't think your stuff was worth stealing!.
Need help to reconfigure my system
Nuguy, your advice is reasonable. Crackpot is not. He needs a "technique" to help him thru this.CP, if you can afford all that "whimsy" buying, you can afford a personal storage space for awhile. You need to get it all out of your sight first. The...
where to plug in the dac and transport
Here's what I did with only a single 20A dedicated circuit available in my apartment:I plugged an ExactPower EP 15A regenerator into the 20A circuit using a Purist Dominus power cord. The EP is rated at 1300W. My system, including the Levinson 200...
SME 20/2 SME V or Triplanar VII?
Garsh, Speedy, I have no idea about trade-ins, since my "dealer" doesn't take trades. But you should have no trouble selling a W or a V on the Gon. Tranny cartridges seem to go very fast. I'd have to know a lot more about the Orpheus' design chang...
SME 20/2 SME V or Triplanar VII?
You can get a brand new Transfiguration Orpheus for $2650 (msrp $5000) Or a Transfiguration Temper V or W for $2100 (msrp $4000) and you'll have the same stellar performance IMO as the Dyna or ZYX (maybe better ;--) BTW, Transfiguration makes the ...
SME 20/2 SME V or Triplanar VII?
Raul, re using only static balance: Are you saying that with an SME V, for instance, you should set the spring balance dial to zero, and then set the VTF using only the counterweight? That's very interesting. Does the spring really cause so much r...
S-Video Cable wont work
It should work, but you may not have all the software properly configured (I assume you're using the laptop for a DVD transport?) Don't forget, the S cable is video only, so you'll have to get the audio from the laptop to the TV using an audio cab...
My digital front end outdoes my analog.....
Doug, thanks for playing the "heavy" this time ;-)N.
SME 20/2 SME V or Triplanar VII?
The SME is a great arm no question. I've had mine for 16 years, including a factory service and internal wire upgrade a couple of years ago. But I've upgraded my cartridges over the years to the point where now, I could enjoy the benefits of an ar...
