Optical or coax?
OK, if you are referring to the Mcintosh MC861 DVD player, I would definitely recommend using a high quality digital coax. Its "optical" output is Toslink, and although you can get the ICs in glass fiber (as opposed to the standard plastic fiber) ...
Optical or coax?
Are you talking about real glass fiber optical (AT&T ST) or plastic* optical (Toslink)?* Toslink is available now made w/ glass fiber, but still has the same limitations as the plastic stuff.

Gary, TA (short for tonearm) thought it might have an Audionote tonearm. Doesn't Audionote still make that TT under their name?In any case, Kenyon has a point about the 50 vs. 60Hz isasue. The folks at Teres (turntables) seem to know where to sourc...

Doesn't Audio Note now make that TT? The original Voyd I believe used Pabst motors (three of them) and they're still in business if you wanted to change the motors to 120V version, although using a SDT would be more cost-effective ;-)What TA does ...

Just plug it into your electric range or dryer outlet -- (only kidding!! ;--)Actually TT motors draw generally (way) less than 100W, usually 10-30W, so you shouldn't need anything with big capacity. If it's a well known brand (why don't people ever...
What happens when?
If you do get the C41 and your phono sounds good (loud enough with the preamp's volume control around 12 o'clock) you might still find the sound a little hard or glarey, with insufficient bass. If you do, it means the default 47Kohm input load of ...

Your Evo 3 is a high output moving coil cartridge and it's basically designed to work with moving magnet phonostages that are built into a lot of good preamps like the C41. It won't be weak, it'll be just right.

Just a note about output with Transfiguration products: they use the JVC test record. Most other manufacturers use the CBS test record which gives values 1.6x the "JVC" values. In addition, most phono preamp gain specs are tied to outputs based on...

What happens when?
You'll need to turn the volume on your preamp all the way up, and then go sit right in front of your speakers wearing a hearing aid . . . . . . .

Thanks Aoliviero. It sure would be hard to part with my Tranny W. Hmmm, I wonder what I could get for it ;--)
Connecing Balanced and Unbalanced at the same time
kas, isn't the Pioneer a preamp/processor?
Connecing Balanced and Unbalanced at the same time
So lets see if I understand. You have a multiformat player with both a coax and perhaps a Toslink 2-channel digital out you can feed to an outboard DAC, correct? (For movies, I presume the player is connected to the processor with analog outputs s...
Connecing Balanced and Unbalanced at the same time
Yes you can do that if you don't mind switching. And, to avoid having to switch when you don't feel like it, get a Wadia or Levinson DAC (and there might be a couple others). They both have volume control, AND they both have RCA and XLR outputs THA...
