Cartridge - sweet spot on the cost/sound curve? Not quite. If a curve is traced where sound quality is on the X axis and cost is on the Y axis, there exists a theoretical infinite set of sweet spots ocurring at any point on the curve. By stipulating the budget of $500, the OP is looking for the...
I feel for you On the contrary, the beauty of a cohesive understanding stimulates both hemispheres. "Science is the poetry of reality.” – Richard Dawkins. Only if you define "mind" exclusively in terms of the left brain!

Resistors for phono preamp I use TX2575 Z foils from partsconnexion in my phono amps with great results. Expect cleaner, blacker backgrounds and better image definition. Example
Simple tube-use question I've never used tube with stickers on the glass. Small signal tubes don't get that hot. Most glues will melt when heated and the sticker will fall off anyway.
Cartridge - sweet spot on the cost/sound curve? Swap the phono leads on your PS Audio phono to make sure the sound level issue reverses (to rule out an issue with the amp.) EDIT: ^ Elliott got there before me!
Linn Bedrok LP12 Plinth Upgrade @lewm The term used in the Old Country referring to a good outcome from tweaking and tinkering is well-fettled. e.g. 'I have a well-fettled LP12.' #3 Someone who fiddles or tinkers with things
Phono stages: Hagerman and Sun Valley 1616 possible giant killers @mulveling oops. Thanks for the correction. That’s embarrassing. I always assumed Hagerman was a genius for pulling that off without FETs and using 6 tubes instead of the usual 3 in MM amps. Ah well...
Phono stages: Hagerman and Sun Valley 1616 possible giant killers No longer posting here but @bkeske was impressed with the 6 tube MC version of the Trumpet—especially after rolling in Telefunkens etc. Note that as it’s a tube MC section, likely a little noisier than FET or SUT.
Is there usually a dramatic difference between $5k and $10k cartridges ? @jasonbourne71 No. An engine costs at least $1m. The cheaper ones are compromises for the poor. Let’s assume an engine for a BMW automobile costs $10K to build.

Is there usually a dramatic difference between $5k and $10k cartridges ? It costs at least $10,000 retail to make a cartridge. Just as it costs at least $200,000 for an automobile. Anything less expensive is merely compromise for the poor.
Do you agree with John Atkinson (and me)? @snilf You need better friends. Literally none of my most musical friends care at all about audio sound quality.
Do you agree with John Atkinson (and me)? @bdp24 I make a delicious lasagne. |
