Pro-ject tube box DS sounds mushy in the middle
Good. RTFM. ;-)
Power conditioner help
Try your rig without a PC.

Possibly. Did you lose a quality that you had with another phono amp? Or is this your first in comparison with your digital source? You could try brighter tubes like Electro Harmonix. What is your cartridge? MC settings could be incorrect.
Great Stereophile article on a friend of mine, drummer Billy Drummond
My dentist is Zach Pearlman. And I know a guy whose name is Mr. Taylor and... he is a tailor.
Upgrading to an external Phonostages for my system
Thanks for the update. Someone said tube phono preamps are not quiet. I have to respectfully disagree as long as it is well designed and the tubes are not faulty.
CARTRIDGE WOES?
I too use vintage gear. I am somewhat bemused by the original poster's reaction to donc55's prognosis. I believe he is spot on. Your turntables and tonearms are not up to the job.
Questionable service at Soundsmith
Peter, met you at the New York audio show in 2014 while you were demoing the excellent Straingauge cartridge in the VPI turntable. You were a gentleman as a bunch of us listened to some great music. Best wishes.
cartridge cleaning? Not the stylus........
Someone asked about Magic Eraser. Let the stylus drop on the damped cue into the eraser. Then lift it using the cue. Repeat a few times. Do NOT move the eraser nor drag it over stylus as you could pull the diamond off.
cartridge headshell screws.
Replaced the aluminium bolts (into the Decca plastic threads) with brass ones on mine. Sounds better. I reverted back to be sure and it sounded awful. Way better with the heavier brass ones -with the bolts screwed upwards with nuts on top.
Preamp inverts signal.
GeoffK, very possibly. It's a fairly straightforward path. I'll go with what sounds best though.
Preamp inverts signal.
My Croft 25R inverts but reversing speaker leads dulled the dynamics enough to be noticeable. I put them back to the way they are marked. I tried this with a number of recordings and results were consistent.
Has biwire speaker cabling become "old" ?
Bare wire so much better than crimped/welded/soldered joints to plugs/spades.
15A vs. 20A power cord questions
This burn-in time is daft. Who can possibly hear qualitative improvements over a period of 6-8 months? What about power tube wear? Capacitor deterioration? Power line noise, personal physical changes, ionic pollution due to weather? Daft I tell yo...
how much better is the kuzma 4 point then my TTW Jelco
