Old vs. new
What they said. Many old records from the golden age of vinyl sound way better than anything recorded now. And many originals sound better than repressings. My feeling is that once any recording is digitized for remastering, the essential essence ...

@bdp24  From Stereophile:" Quad decided to paint them gray when it was discovered that the gleam of raw poly was visible through the grille. The treble panel's dustcover escaped that indignity owing to the fear that the weight of the paint woul...

@bdp24 My grilles are black and literally perfect. I'm afraid the attic temp fluctuations would warp them. I have the bass panel rear pads out but left the treble panels one in. Have you removed that too? My mylar dustcovers are sprayed matt grey....
What tonearm will better mine?
@jperry Thanks Jim. Yes. I've since changed the AS idler for an Artisan Fidelity wheel. Not cheap at $400 inc. shipping and not as dramatic an improvement as the AS over the rubber original. Nevertheless, it tuned and brought more air to the bass ...

Stereophile report from Jim Austin.
Best wood under audio components?
Depends what components and whether you are trying to damp the sound. Check out the comparitive hardness of woods here. The harder the wood, the "harder" the sound. By harder, I mean more focussed, detailed and perhaps brighter. The softer woods wi...

And... at the end of the day... just fired up my system. Buddy Tate Live at Sandy’s 1978. Better sounding than anything I heard at the show.

Agreed. Hate that hotel (and we stayed there.) @robyatt Robin Wyatt’s room was fun with some great music and demos using mono recordings on a Technics SL10 Mk2 and Quad ESL57s. The highlight for me by far. Chad Nessem from Acoustic Sounds also dem...
