@chakster is right. Except, the old classics are hard to find and relatively expensive considering you are looking for "cheapo cartridges." The 540 has a microline stylus.

You can't go wrong with either an Audio Technica VM540ML (brighter) or Nagaoka MP110 or 150 for bang for the buck. 
Why No McIntosh Recommendations?
@noble100 said it! I find the stuff pretty ghastly to look at -the green LEDs lighting up the small signal tubes being the nail in the coffin.

@saxman73 Look at a Jelco TK-850S tonearm. $795 from George Merrill. I use a few with Decca cartridges. Excellent performer. 
Wharfedale Linton Heritage 85th Anniversary
I heard them at AXPONA and wasn't impressed. Maybe it was the source and amplification but they had an exaggerated upper midband and sucked out lower midband lending the sound a slight boom-tizz effect.

I’ll just add that the guys behind it whom I spoke to at AXPONA were hilarious, straight-talking guys. They acknowledged the product's shortcomings and benefits and position in the marketplace. The product was heavy and very well built.
