Soundbar or speakers?
If economy and ease are factors, get a soundbar and sub. We have one. $149. Optical link allows TV remote to control it. Sounds great. Bass is good.very clear sound.

Oh, and a variac isn't an "isolation transformer," it's an autoformer where the pickup wiper is on the same coil.

It's buzzing under the relatively heavy load as the coil is energized by the alternating current. You could try the ubiquitous  red $110 20A 2000watt model.  
Subwoofer location/facing question
A sub loads the room. It doesn't or is not intended to be firing at you. Corner placement is the more efficient place to do this.

I find the loading setting to sound best for my Deccas at 47k.* Lower values, while recommended, took some life away. It could be argued that I am not damping a resonance in the presence region but... *I experimented and found that using 51k Visha...

Yeah, the low ride can pick up fluff but I find that the stylus picks up a lot less than cantilever-based cartridges. Agreed on the soft brush -you don’t want to damage the tieback cord or worse. No idea about the AT637 but can't imagine there'd b...

I’d prefer to hear their kit on a high-res video host using a solid, acknowledged recorder.
