Have you rolled the tubes in the EAR? A set of NOS Telefunkens would breathe new life into it. Replace the Nag with an MP500 (or NOS MP50 if you can find one) and you might be surprised.  
Tubes used in VTL 6.5 II preamp?
They may be rebranded and not readily identified. Probably selected Gold Lion, Electro-Harmonix or JJs.

Awesome that some bright entrepreneurs are exploiting the wealthy. It's covert redistribution and revolution in one. 
My record player sounds slightly high pitched
Start saving for a better turntable. Aim for a Pioneer PLX1000 with Nagaoka MP110 and Schiit Mani phono amp. Below that, a Project Debut Carbon/Audio Technica AT95 would be a decent starter table. All those cheaper ones are junk.

I read that article in the mag and my first thought was that JVS was doing his best to convince himself that this was worth the price so he could give it the usual Stereophile recommendation. Nice knob, though. 
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
Monoblocks beside the speakers with real short speaker cables, separate power supplies that minimize modulation from the other channel’s power supply sag on demand, separate circuits that minimize interference from the other channel’s electronics ...
