While it is expensive to the average person, it's not even a thought to the wealthy. Manufacturers prefer to sell a few to the rich than lots to the masses.

Their new turntable is featured in the last Stereophile mag. It’s half a million bucks and fugly! Ludicrous. I heard their small cube and cone horn speaker on 300B SETs once and was stunned at their then price of $22k.

Well, that bites. Getting old is the worst. Even his $200m+ wealth can't fix him. You can taste the frustration. Nevertheless, great to see his offspring continue the legacy.  
how is digital sound created?
Digital devices generate the sound internally or sample the sound externally. Those electronic "frequencies" are converted to analog waveforms which can be amplified to drive a transducer (speaker) which moves the air.

Build-up on stylus - any new cures?
When the stylus gets dirty, I add a few drops of 91% alcohol to the ME. That generally takes care of it. Agree with @slaw keep records clean; less gunk and your stylus will last longer.

Quick listen on the phone so there's that. A sounds better to me. It's probably your Sony XL88D! But knowing your penchant for MM finds, it wouldn't surprise me if A was a vintage MM.
