Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ?
Hey Gaslover,I have a 'Grandson' in my basement that I hear is the (not power wise of course) 'killer' of them all. The elderly gentlemen that I got it from (lost his hearing) said that it was beautifully 'voiced'. I have had it now for years and ...
Harman Kardon Citation 22 No Love?
The Citation line was built of very high quality parts (open one up) and excellent, reliable, musical design. I sold every Mac amp I had (nine) after hearing and buying a Citation 16A 10 years ago. These puppies were hand built and each was listen...
Where does your user name come from?
My Parents.
Aging technology versus inevitably aging ears...
This is a great post! I had two racks full of McIntosh gear, when (bored out of my mind) I listened to an old beat up Citation 16a amplifier. I soon sold the Mac gear and put together a period hi-fi around the Citation 17 preamp, 16A amp. I have n...
When is used used up?
"Power supply capacitor is in series with a speaker (circuit closes thru power supply) and any increase in ESR will show as worse bass control (lower DF) and loss of dynamics."I would love to read the white paper on this.. if you have one please l...
Wow, I heard things on tape I never heard before
Ken, and I thought I was knowledgeable. Thank you for the post and all of the great information. I am going to order a few ATR pancakes, as I have plenty of empty reels laying around.Keep in touch.Norman
When is used used up?
I have owned many old mac amps, and when I acquire them, I send them to Mac for general servicing. I have NEVER had them do anymore than replace a burned out lamp. Ever! And I am talking about amps and preamps that were 15 to 30plus years old. Eac...
Wow, I heard things on tape I never heard before
Ken, isn't ATR essentially Ampex 456? Comparing the two, they seem to have the same color, smell (yeah, different brand smell differently..Scotch 206 makes me flash back, but that's another story) texture etc. They also seem to record the same. I ...
Reel to Reel
Group, aside from ordering online from Quantegy, and ATR and RMGI (google is your friend here) you can also order it from your local Guitar Center in the 'Pro Audio' department. You have to ask them to 'look it up', because half of the staff their...
Wow, I heard things on tape I never heard before
Hello Ken, well you have me wishing I could afford an ATR machine and a Krell SACD player. I do agree, it takes the 'digital harshness' off the music. I too am selective. If I can find NOS maxell UDXL then I buy it. It comes up every now and then ...
Wow, I heard things on tape I never heard before
I have never experienced that before, at least not when making copies of LP's to open reel. That doesn't seem to make sense to me. I would agree that even a second generation master tape is far superior to LP. I use 1/2 track machines running at 1...
McIntosh MC2002 And MA6100
I had a 6100 for years too, as well as a C-28, C-29. You shouldn't have any problems with the 6100. I think the phono section of the 6100 is very nice, tight and quiet. Try it first before you spend your hard earned money. Trust me, it's no slouch...
McIntosh MC2002 And MA6100,C30 0r C32
I had a 6100 for years. It is essentially a C-26, which means it is a very nice preamp. The amp section of the 6100 is no slouch either. I like the C-28, C-29 preamps. I had those too. Very nice. The C-29 probably has a little on the 6100, but not...
grace tonearm repairs
I have a Grace. Hmm, weren't these imported by Sumiko? You might try calling them. http://www.sumikoaudio.net/ Here is the website, contacting them wouldn't hurt.Grace went out of business, which is such a shame. The current Grace company is a Chi...
ARISTON RDIIS and SME series III + DENON SA?
Using the Denon won't be a problem. I have not heard the Accuphase, but I do enjoy the Denon quite a bit. The Denon will have a bit more dymanics when used on an idler driven table, but I am sure you will love it with the Ariston.Best,Norman
