The pivoted arm experiment is over
Mepearson, I was looking for your report as you promised in that "are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms". Hats off to you in going thru this expensive and obviously time consuming experiement. But I am glad you did that. You would not ...
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
Dertonearm, good point on the short lever and VTA/VTF changes when tracked over a warped record. Mine does dance up and down and side to side when I play with my short levered linear arm. It is a sight to admire and be amazed that inspite of more ...
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
Agreed, Dgarretson!
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
Let us not forget that pivot arm also has friction (owing to slow tracking speed, this is static and not dynamic coefficient of friction) at the bearing and due to this friction the arm would also have "+/- X force" (x force normal to the pivot ar...

Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
Thales tonearm, looks like a very ingenious design indeed. Thanks Darkmo and Hiho. I will have to add this one to my wish list.Dgarretson, well said. Comparison should be on level set baseline, not an anomalous situation of off center and warped r...
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
One unique thing I just realized about linear tonearm is that I find myself cleaning the needle a lot compared to (if ever!) my other two set ups with pivot arms. This may mean that linear arm has perfect snug contact vs pivot arms hence picking u...
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
Mepearson, I forgot to put a smiley face (;-))at the end of my sentence saying you gave up too early. I did realize that you wanted to try out what you said top notch pivot arms. That IS indeed open minded. In fact, I have plans to install another...
Are linear tracking arms better than pivoted arms?
I was about to raise question that DarkMo just did."In the case of lateral force issues mentioned about linear arms, is this more a of mechanical/longevity concern or one of noticeable sonics, too? "I think the discussion somehow got steered towar...
The best no-compromise digital options?
I also own the Zanden combo and think it is very hard to surpass this combo with anything else. Nothing beats Zanden for Jazz playback, not even my beloved TT set up. And it does great with all other music too. I also found Dcs stack analytical (t...
15,000 LP's - What to do with records?
And yeah, If you do it right, you might get a new 'porschecab' out of the sell ;-)
15,000 LP's - What to do with records?
Amoeba Music would also buy good chunk, especially they are NOS jazz and classical, if you are in LA area or SF area, and probably pay a good chunk for it.You can keep some select ones for yourself. It is a good problem you got there.
Quick poll: Listening at night, lights ON or OFF ?
On. Live music is mostly played with lights on. I will try it tonight with lights off to hear what the fuss is all about.
Tubes vs. solid state.
Agree, Tubes do magic if done right. So can SS amps. But,still, IME, best SS amps still can't give 3D sound that best tube amps produce.Tubes give a whole new 'complete' 3rd dimension.I have two good phono pres ( 1 ss and 1 tube) and the differenc...
