amp for maggies 3.6
Not sure what your budget is but electrostatic speakers usually equate to dips in impedance throughout a song. Look for amps that can go down to 2 ohms (or 1 ohm) and remain stable with no meaningful increase in distortion.I'd suggest the new Bel ...
anyone compared the hydra vs aR6 vs magic stealth
I use a PS Audio Power Plant Premier on my source componets and TV and the Hydra 4 on my power amps which draw a lot of continous wattage. The Hydra seems to lower background noise some and lets a 20amp's 2400 watts through unrestricted which is wa...
Pioneer Blu Ray Player BDP 05 FD
For Digital sources like a cable box or DVD player, I prefer to use a shielded cable like the PS Audio Power Punch that can be ordered with the C7 end for the cable box and the Plus SC or Prelude for the DVD. I use their Plus SC on my CD player as...
anyone compare HD DD w/ DVD to 1.3a receiver in?
Same answer as in the pre lossless codecs/blu-ray world. Connect using the HDMI to a processor that decodes lossless codecs rather than via PCM. The better processors use better components (ie. DACs) and sampling rates so a bitstream connection is...
Spectron Mk II, is it really that good.
Perhaps it is system or speaker dependent or the sound you are looking for but I like my MK2 with V-Cap upgrade (makes it more liquid sounding). The sound is very musical sort of between tubes and SS but with tremedous headroom and tigh solid bass...
Bassheads-DSP important????????Velodyne SMS??
Personally, I like the Velodyne Digitial Direct series that offers low distortion and a lot of power (class D) and can be automatically calibrated to your room or manually set using the suppplied connection cables to your TV so you can see peaks a...
can a tube-o-phile be happy with ss?
As someone said it depends on your speakers, source components (tube or SS or hybrid). The type of amp is going to sway the sonic signature more than the preamp, imo.I am using a Spectron MK w/V-Cap upgrade that is very musical and not SS or tube ...
Speaker Packing?
I used to work for FedEx for 19 years and truly the only way to ship full siz floor standing speakers is via freight on a pallet shrinked wrapped with lift gate service to your door. The only exception I can think of is where the speaker manufactur...
How to determine Preamp "Power"? VTL 5.5 vs BAT SE
You might also look at the ARC LS26.
Anyone using a Power Plant to power an XBR CRT?
I use a Power Plant Premier where I plug my Sony 36" XBR HD into and it does help with clarity. You have to be careful not to exceed the power capacity of the Power Plant you have or it will go into pass through mode and just pass normal AC power ...
Help with buzz / hum that's making me insane r
Is it a hum (ground loop issue), buzz, or hiss from your tweeters? Some hiss from tweeters may be normal when you put your ear right up to the tweeter. Buzz or crackling is another story.
Why did you switch from Audio Research Ref 3?
Hoping not to steal this thread, I've been considering the ARC Ref 3, VTL 6.5, the Cary SLP-05, the ARC LS-26 and the McIntosh C2300 as I move to 2 channel only. The problem is no in my area carries any of these so I can't audition anything. My mai...
Impedance Matching Preamp/Amp Assiance Pls?
Thanks. Can you explain the 10:1 rule? 10 X 400=4000 ohms and the input impedance of the Spectron it 50,000 phms. So I'm not sure I understand why everything is ok.Also, can you provide me an example where impedances don't match well and the conse...
Help choosing coupling caps
The Teflon V-Caps take a goog 400 hours to run in before soundinig their best. Perhaps that is why you don't hear them as musical and natural sounding yet. Yes, they are revealing but not bright once broken in.
Which is the most tubelike solid state amp around
Spectron MK2 with the V-Cap Option.
